Job Description

The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art strives to create positions for students to work closely with a specific Museum department while allowing moments for broad learning of museum practice.

The Preparator Assistant will work directly with our Chief Art Preparator and Assistant Preparator to prepare and maintain gallery spaces for exhibitions while practicing professional care for the objects.

Responsibilities and work projects:

  • Gallery preparation, including patching and painting walls and pedestals
  • Assisting with art handling, moves, and packing artwork
  • Basic upkeep of galleries and cleaning

Skills and knowledge that will be gained:

  • Training in basic art handling, packing techniques, and framing
  • Introduction to exhibition design, planning, and installation
  • General knowledge of collection care
  • Being an effective team member

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to learn new skills quickly, be methodical, and attentive to detail
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable working on ladders/heights
  • Familiarity with Excel
  • Self-motivated and good-natured

This position is only open to current university and college students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in painting and using hand tools is helpful, but not required
