The Deputy Weekend Editor plays a central role in shaping the National desk’s 24/7 report, working with editors and correspondents to coordinate coverage of both breaking news and planned events, and ensuring a stream of enterprise and feature stories from across the country to drive the weekend.

The Deputy Weekend editor has experience working independently and understands how to set priorities when breaking news demands attention. You are comfortable being the last set of eyes on a story before publication and proficient in all aspects of digital production.

This is a hybrid position based in New York, reporting to the Weekend Editor and requires regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

Management/leadership duties

  • You will assign stories to general assignment reporters and correspondents responsible for weekend coverage, and to other beat and regional reporters on an ad hoc basis when you contribute to National storylines in their purviews
  • You will coordinate with other editors on management and training of fellows
  • You will stay current on new story formats and digital innovations in the newsroom
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Planning and organizing the report

  • You will coordinate with editors and audience team on story publication and promotion plans
  • You will work in collaboration with the Weekend Editor, maintain weekend digital and print budgets; track weekend budgets
  • You will establish weekend print priorities and communicate with print hub
  • You will ensure smooth handoff of live slugs and developing stories to the weekday crew
  • You will maintain strong relationships and communication with other desks, especially the news desk

Assigning and editing

  • You will identify weekend coverage priorities and monitor sources for breaking news, coordinating with other editors on deployment decisions and launching reporters as needed
  • You will monitor wires, local and regional outlets, social media feeds and other sources for developing trends and storylines, keeping us ahead of national competitors
  • You will take on any editing duties on a Live blog as necessary, including being lead editor
  • You will look for opportunities to generate stories that engage weekend readers, whether through nontraditional story forms like explainers, or features that are related to high-interest story topics
  • You will work with the News Director to plan advance and ongoing coverage of major events, such as high-profile trials and funerals, hurricane and wildfire seasons, etc.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization
  • Experience stepping in at all stages of the editing process, from a story’s conception to first editing through its publication
  • Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment
  • Experience working in high-pressure, deadline-driven newsrooms -- including coverage, workflow, as a reporter or editor (depends on role)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong understanding of Times style and standards
  • A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve
