Role Summary

We’re seeking a dynamic, strategic, and experienced Head of Communications to lead our organization’s voice—internally, externally, and at the executive level. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for developing and executing a unified communications strategy that connects our mission, culture, and brand across all audiences.

You’ll partner closely with Co-CEOs, the leadership team, and cross-functional leaders to build a high-performing communications function that is proactive, forward-thinking, and deeply aligned with our values.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement a cohesive, future-facing communications strategy that integrates internal, external, board, and partner communications.
  • Craft and reinforce a compelling organizational narrative, ensuring message consistency across all channels.
  • Serve as a strategic communications partner to People, Legal/Compliance, Program Management, and other key departments.

Team Development and Oversight

  • Assess current communications resources and structure; identify and recruit top talent to build a high-performing, agile team.
  • Drive operational excellence by establishing scalable processes, workflows, and performance standards for communications.

Executive Communications

  • Provide direct communications support to the Co-CEOs, including key message development and event preparation.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the executive team, offering insight and strategy on key communication opportunities and challenges.

Internal Communications and Culture Building

  • Lead the development and management of internal communications tools and platforms (e.g., intranet, collaboration systems).
  • Support and amplify culture and engagement initiatives, aligning messaging with organizational values and employee experience goals.

External Communications

  • Strengthen and scale PR/media strategies to grow brand visibility and reputation.
  • Partner on the development of a data-informed employer brand platform that attracts top-tier talent through SEO-driven content, targeted messaging, and optimized digital presence.
  • Develop and maintain an effective crisis communication framework in collaboration with Legal, HR, and Operations.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in communications, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience building and leading high-performing communications teams.
  • Exceptional writing, storytelling, and executive presence.
  • Experience navigating complex internal and external stakeholder environments.
  • A collaborative, strategic mindset with the ability to move seamlessly between high-level strategy and hands-on execution.
  • Strong analytical and operational skills, including experience with digital communications tools, metrics, and reporting.

Pay Disclosure

Salary Range/Hourly Rate for California Based Applicants: 161,000 USD - 252,000 USD (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).

Benefits Summary: Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time and part-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Full Time Employee coverage is effective on the first day of employment. Part-Time employee coverage is effective the first of the month following 90 days of employment.
