The Office of the Kansas Attorney General's Civil Division operates as a general-service law firm for the State of Kansas and its many constituent agencies. We provide legal advice as general counsel to agencies across state government. We represent State agencies, institutions of higher education, and employees sued in state and federal court for personal injuries, property damage, employment discrimination, and more.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Civil Division’s Defensive Litigation section. Attorneys in this section defend the State of Kansas and its agencies in all manner of defensive civil litigation: torts, employment suits, prisoner litigation, wrongful conviction claims, contract disputes, civil rights claims, appeals from administrative decisions, and a host of other civil claims. They handle cases through motions practice, discovery, settlement negotiations, and trial as necessary.

The First Assistant Attorney General will litigate cases and lead a team with subordinate attorneys and administrative support professionals. The successful candidate will be devoted to mentoring junior attorneys. They will also be able to articulate a vision for the Attorney General’s defensive litigation efforts and have ideas for triaging and efficiently working through a large caseload, which will include identifying cases to be assigned to outside counsel and overseeing outside litigation efforts.

Duties: Drafting/arguing pre-trial motions; pleading preparation; interviewing clients and witnesses; legal research and writing; conducting depositions; conducting negotiations; participating in administrative hearings; researching, interpreting, and applying statutes, court decisions, or other legal authority on points of law; managing subordinate personnel, and overseeing case management within the section.

The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by persons assigned to this title. They may not include all job duties performed by employees on this job title and additional duties may be added.
