The Machine Operator (2nd shift) is responsible for loading the machines with pieces of pipe that have been cut to a specified length per the production schedule (cut blanks). Some machines must be “hand-fed” by the operator. The operator uses his/her hands to pick up the cut blanks out of the tub and place them into the machine loading magazine (above shoulder reach). Other machines are fed automatically as the operator uses a rake to pull cut blanks into a large bowl that rotates and loads them into the machines. The operator is responsible for running up to six machines based on production demands.

The operator must periodically check the pipe nipples for quality using a certified ring gage. The pipe nipples must meet the required specifications. Cuttings are pushed into the harpoon system beneath the machines where they are ground into small pieces. A clean and safe work area must be maintained.

The operator must maintain quality in accordance with specifications. They must notify the auto thread mechanic when their machine is in need of having the chasers sharpened. The mechanic is then responsible for removing, sharpening and replacing the chasers.

The operator must also maintain the proper level of all lubricants using site gages or visual inspection. All operators are responsible for keeping accurate production records. The records are keyed into the computer system. If the computer system is down or the operator ran a special part, the records are handwritten on cards by the operator. The operator is responsible for meeting established production standards.
