The Unit Assistant functions primarily in a clerical role but is expected to assist with other functions as needed and as directed by Nurse Manager and Supervisor. This position coordinates patient and departmental activities, including chart checks and quick registration when required, under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and Supervisor.
(75%)* Clerical Duties: Monitors and tracks orders and ancillary department testing to ensure efficiency and that core measures are met whenever possible; Performs quick registrations when ambulance or expedited patients arrive in the department, attaches ID bracelet, and ensures proper patient identifiers are performed; Prints appropriate documents for physician documentation, places documents on chart labeled with patient stickers, places chart in rack for physician and/or mid-level; Makes arrangements for bed assignments through contact with floor, supervisor, utilization review and/or patient placement as required; Makes calls to physicians/hospitals when needed and facilitates the admissions/transfers of patients with appropriate documents and signatures obtained. Ensures all documents are completed in full as required. Prints or requests copies of charts, x-rays, or other files as needed for transfer; Ensures EMTALA transfer data is complete in EMR; other duties as assigned.
(25%)* Unit Duties: Keeps track of supplies and notifies appropriate person as supplies are needed; Maintains, stocks, and cleans work areas as needed; answers call lights; assist with non-clinical patient care such as delivery food trays; supplying patient nutrition; cleaning rooms to assist in patient flow; other duties as assigned within scope of training.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times.
Participates in the orientation of new personnel to the unit.
Assists in general cleanliness of the department.
Maintains current call list for physicians.
Assists with transfer of patients to floor or transport non-telemetry patients when appropriate.
Provides and ensures safe and secure environment for the patient.
Maintains a clean, safe and orderly unit Emergency care/safety.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Prior nursing secretary experience in health care desired.
Organizational skills required to prioritize workload.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals, groups and to interact with people at all levels, to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
