Minimum Qualifications

Position Summary

The Scientific Glass Shop at UGA services campus laboratories for USG schools and private companies. Our goal is to provide competitive cost for repairs, custom apparatus with fast turn around times. Student assistant will help glass shop manager with producing simple glassware, and will gain hands on experience work borosilicate glass in a flame. During employment, this person will be exposed to schematics or prints relative to the project assigned and will read and follow necessary guidelines in order to fabricate the project. It is understood that most of what this person will be involved in will have detailed instruction in order to maintain safety and efficiency during working periods. This position will work with the shop manager and occasional drop ins or phone calls as necessary. This position report to the Glass Shop Manager at beginning of each shift. They are assigned a task or are instructed to complete one in process. This position will receive training on safety and skills regarding quality glassblowing with projects assigned. This position will also help organize, clean, answer phone and occasionally assist manager with large projects.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position

Any experience with hot glass bench work using hard glass is preferred. Completion of the Intro to Scientific Glass Class offered at UGA will be a strong part of an applicant’s resume for this position.

Physical Demands

Physical demands include being able to lift up to 40 pounds of glassware or glass shop equipment. Sitting behind an active glassblowing torch for multiple hours will be a main part of the position. Student worker will be exposed to hot temperatures and broken glassware and should not be overly frightened of such materials or environments.
