Position Summary

The Group Leader, Tool Engineering works closely with Team Leaders and Management team to ensure their respective area is meeting quality Green Zone standards, documentation, and continuous improvement progress. Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Tool Engineering, the Group leader supervises 2-4 Team Leaders and 5-7 total Tool Regrind Team Members. The person works closely in the department to improve processes and ensure quality.

Position Responsibilities

The incumbent is expected to perform the following functions that the company has determined are essential to this position:

  • Ensure company goals/targets are met on a daily basis regarding: Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Manpower, 4S, Machine up-time, etc.
  • Leads continuous improvement activities that can increase productivity and reduce cost.
  • Develop, implement, follow and countermeasure plans in support of company and departmental goals and targets. Especially quick implementation of CMs of customer issues. Work steadily and consistently towards targets.
  • Work with Tool Engineers to write Work Instructions for different applications
  • Learn to understand gear regrind such as broaches, splines, hobs, pot broach, along with operate all machines in tool regrind
  • Foster good working relationships between Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, PC, Maintenance, and Japanese coordinators to achieve goals.
  • Mediate, as necessary, to work through problems. Be “hands on” and demonstrate “Genchi Genbutsu” (go and see) for significant issues.
  • Fosters communication between Team Leaders and Managers and works closely with other Group leaders in Manufacturing, Assembly, and Quality, Engineering and Manufacturing support groups.
  • Provides guidance to Team Leaders regarding policies and procedures and maintains heavy focus on safety, quality, production and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Manage Team Members time off schedule such as vacation, FMLA, PTO and working hours. Make improvements to reduce over time.
  • Provide reports weekly in product availability and rework.

Required Skills and Abilities

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • 4-7 years of Machining experience
  • 2 years experience in a leadership capacity, overseeing a team of skilled colleagues
  • Proven Leadership and communication skills that can influence a diverse team member population
  • 2 years production and problem solving experience including TPS, 5 why’s and PDCA
  • Strong organization and planning skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and deal with frequent interruptions
  • Self-Motivated, Team Oriented, and must display a positive approach towards change and flexibility in daily operations

Beneficial Skills and Experience

  • 3-5 years Manufacturing Experience in High Volume Production
  • Understanding of basic gear cutting and measurement.
  • Basic knowledge of cutting tool such as insert, drill, end mill, reamer, etc.
  • General knowledge of metal cutting processes & tooling.

Education/Training/Certifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma; Successful completion of an Associates Degree in an affiliated field of study is preferred
