The South Dakota State University (SDSU) School of Design invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice in Graphic Design to begin no later than August 2025. The position is full-time, nine-month, benefit eligible with a typical workload of 90% teaching and 10% service and reports to the Director of the School of Design. We are looking for candidates with strong foundational knowledge of graphic design and expertise in at least one of the disciplinary content areas. The position is typically 90% teaching and 10% service and reports to the Director of the School of Design.

The School of Design includes accredited degrees in the visual arts: graphic design, and studio arts and the built environment: architecture, interior design and landscape architecture. Collectively, School faculty form a collaborative teaching and research environment that values cross-program and interdisciplinary initiatives. The successful candidate will contribute to building national and international stature and recognition for the discipline, School and University.

SDSU offers a 4-year NASAD accredited Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design degree. The major in Graphic Design prepares students for entry-level design positions. Professional graphic designers plan and execute designs for visual communication according to the needs of audiences and clients in the context for which they are intended. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach courses within the professional curriculum, including foundational courses and expertise in one of the disciplinary content areas.
  • Provide service to the discipline, university, and community.
  • Teach in multi-disciplinary courses within the School of Design.

DISCIPLINARY CONTENT AREAS:

  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas: 1) packaging design, 2) motion graphics, 3) interactive design, or 4) UX/UI design.

SALARY:

The salary is commensurate with qualifications, minimum of $60,000. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Terminal degree (masters or PhD) in Graphic Design or related field or international equivalent by time of appointment.
  • Potential to develop and teach academic coursework in one or more of the disciplinary content areas.
  • Minimum of 5 years, full-time practice in the field.
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching Graphic Design at the university level.
  • Record of service within the discipline and/or profession.
  • Professional experience in one of the disciplinary content areas.
  • More than 5 years full-time practice in the field or in university level teaching.
