A Brief Overview

The Coding Team Leader provides leadership and guidance to ensure ongoing coding quality and compliance with regulatory guidelines. Assists in monitoring of daily, weekly, and monthly coding processes.

Experience Qualifications

  • 1 year Experience coding Professional Claims to include assignment of ICD-9CM/ICD-10 and CPT/HCPCS code assignment. Required
  • Experience with HCC Coding. Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-Based (CCS-P) - AHIMA Required within the first 6 months and one of the following other credentials required: CPC (Certified Professional Coder), RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician), RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator). Required

What you will do

  • Responsible for collecting accurate and timely productivity data and sharing information with the appropriate staff and responsible for providing reports to Director as requested in a timely manner. Maintains productivity stats and updates reports weekly.
  • In collaboration with Director will ensure timely completion and updates to all department policies & procedures and implementation of LEAN standard work for coding procesesses.
  • Ability to troubleshoot work queue issues, take appropriate actions towards resolution, and follow up. Reports to Director when appropriate.
  • Reviews deferred claims and takes appropriate follow up action towards resolution with providers and coding staff. Reports all unresolved issues to Director as appropriate for further action.
  • Serves as backup coder during backlog/high volume or coder absences by utilizing appropriate assignment of ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS procedure coding per coding guidelines while maintaining accuracy requirements.
  • Serves as a resource to all providers/clinic and coding staff for coding inquiries.
  • Interacts with providers/clinic staff to ensure proper coding/claim submission when appropriate when resolving coding issues.
  • Assists in identification of educational opportunities for providers/clinic and coding staff as appropriate and works in collaboration with Director and Coding Education Coordinators for implementation.
  • During Director absence, will lead coding activities and problem solve issues as appropriate to maintain department workflow on short-term basis until Director returns. Will communicate any changes effectively to Director.
  • Commitment to LEAN/Performance Excellence processes established within the coding department and ability to identify process improvements.
