TxDOT's Corpus Christi District is looking for a Transportation Engineer I, II, III or IV to work out of our Central Design Office, located in Corpus Christi, TX! We have a workforce of over 13,000 employees statewide. If you want to build an exciting career, let’s talk!
Our Central Design Office produces Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) for project scopes that include preventive maintenance, rehabs, bridge replacements and freeway expansions. We are responsible for designing projects that meet current design standards, coordinating with all project owners and producing accurate PS&E. Position Description
Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
Transportation Engineer I
- Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
- Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Reviews and revises schematics, PS&E, project designs, shop drawings and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution and roadway lighting and traffic management systems.
- Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
- Writes/reviews proposals and estimates for letting.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer II
In addition to the above
- Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Trains engineering staff.
- Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
- Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
- Reviews and revises schematics, PS&E, project designs, shop drawings and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution and roadway lighting and traffic management systems.
- Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
- Writes/reviews proposals and estimates for letting.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer III
In addition to the above
- Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
- Reviews and revises schematics, PS&E, project designs, shop drawings and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution and roadway lighting and traffic management systems.
- Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
- Trains engineering staff.
- Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.

Transportation Engineer IV
In addition to the above
- Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, monitors the consultant's compliance with the terms of the contract, and/or prepares and delivers a written evaluation of the consultant's performance.
- Performs highly advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
- Reviews and revises schematics, PS&E, project designs, shop drawings and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution and roadway lighting and traffic management systems.
- Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.
- Trains engineering staff.
- Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
- Writes/reviews proposals and estimates for letting.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience:
TE I - 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
TE II - 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
TE III - 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
TE IV - 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Prof Engineer*
- Safety Impact Certificate
- Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
Competencies:
- Hydrologic and hydraulic engineering principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory
- Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
- Construction phasing and sequencing
- Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
- Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
- Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
- Performing basic design and drafting
- Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long-term deadlines
- Planning, assigning, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of professional, administrative and technical employees
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
