Job Summary Job Summary The School Board of the Martinez Unified School District, Martinez, California, is seeking a highly qualified, fully certified, educational leader to serve as Superintendent. The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2025. Enrollment: 3,772 Location: 35 miles northeast of San Francisco Search Timeline: * Closing date for applications: May 8, 2025 (11:30 p.m. central time) * School Board selects finalists to interview: Week of May 19, 2025 * Interviews with the School Board: May 24 & 25, 2025 * Selection of new Superintendent: June 25th or July 9, 2025 * Start date: July 1, 2025 McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development, a business partner of the California School Boards Association, has been engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the School Board in identifying and screening the candidates.

The Qualifications:

The candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership. The board recognizes that selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions it will make. The board desires candidates that have a proven ability and demonstrated accomplishments for the following position criteria:

Educational Leader: An educational leader who has the proven ability to develop the Martinez Unified School District and promote a vision for the district that focuses on student excellence and achievement. Martinez Unified School District is looking for an educator who must be knowledgeable and current in curriculum and has demonstrated the ability to work with staff in developing a PK-12 articulated curriculum. The next superintendent must know the best practices in teaching and learning, be able to implement effective curriculum and instruction, assist in the selection of purposeful professional development, and employ systems of assessment that all result in increased achievement for all students.

Collaborative Leadership: A high integrity leader that is an effective collaborator and communicator. One who has strong verbal, written, and digital communication skills and is accessible to all. The superintendent must be a team builder who is able to bring people together in unity, establishing trust, transparent, inclusive, and respectful relationships with the Board, administration, staff, students, and community. Specifically, the superintendent must be skilled at keeping the Board informed in a timely manner, understand the role of the Board, and engage them in collaborative decision-making and other efforts that continually strengthen the governance team.

Effective Communicator: A person who is a good listener, open and accessible to all. A leader that is comfortable engaging diverse communities and those with differing opinions. A person with a commitment to working with students, employees, parents and community members from diverse ethnic, racial, gender, and socio-economic backgrounds. A leader who is able to communicate effectively, motivate, and is a highly visible and vested part of our schools and community.

Ethical/Empathetic/Approachable: An ethical leader who models high expectations for self, staff, and students and possesses the personal characteristics of honesty, approachability, empathy, dependability, humor, loyalty, and has a strong work ethic.
