Title: Clinic Scribe/Certified Medical Assistant

Department: UMC Internal Medicine at Southwest Medical

We are seeking a full-time Scribe/CMA to provide direct support to the physician by documenting physician dictated patient history and physical examination and assisting in general tasks to create a more efficient workflow. They will also provide appropriate delegated nursing care to patients, under the guidance and supervision of a licensed health care provider. This position is also responsible for performing activities that assist physicians, mid-level providers, nursing personnel and radiology technicians

Availability Requirements:

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week
  • 8AM-5PM Monday – Thursday, 8AM-12PM Friday

Essential Functions:

  • Record details of chief complaint, history of present illness, review of

systems, past medical history, social history, family medical history,

disease risk factors, medications and allergies.

  • Record details of physical exam, including pertinent positives and

negatives, noted abnormalities and patient general condition.

  • Submit orders as desired by medical provider.
  • Assist in disposition of patient including lab and radiology orders and

instructions and prescriptions.

  • Deliver direct patient care to patients as assigned, using established

procedures.

  • Document history; recording and reporting pertinent observations and

patient reactions to staff, as appropriate; document lab procedures and

ensure follow up on results

  • Use screening procedures, including medical history review, and observe

and document patient vital signs as required

  • Maintain quality results by running standards and controls
  • Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments
  • Verify equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and

advanced trouble-shooting; calibrate equipment utilizing approved testing

procedures; monitor quality control measures and protocols

  • Other duties as delineated by medical provider.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must maintain excellent computer skills and data entry skills; electronic

medical record accessing and data entry

  • Must possess excellent telephone and communication skills
  • Fluent in medical terminology
  • Good grammar and typing skills
  • Proficient in scribing patient data into electronic medical record
  • Proficient in communication with EC physicians, consulting physicians,

nursing staff, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and ancillary staff.

  • Proficient in communication as appropriate with patients and families.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, laboratory and treatment room

procedures

  • Common knowledge of safety hazards and precautions
  • Ability to read, understand and respond to detailed oral and written

instructions

  • Possess the ability to react calmly and effectively in emergencies
  • Must be able to take and record vital signs, maintain records, point-of-care

testing, record results, and administer injections.

  • Performs miscellaneous tasks assigned eagerly and competently.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school/GED
  • CMA certification from the NHA, NAHP, AAMA, or NCCT
  • 1 year of experience in medical clinic setting
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • Recognition of physical exam process and ability to record exam details
  • Computer proficiency and ability to quickly learn new applications
  • Communication skills and organization skills with focus on patient care

and patient flow

  • Professional demeanor and ability to maintain patient confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some College preferred
  • Anatomy & Physiology preferred

Physical Capabilities:

Work is of medium demand; walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting of patients with assistance is required. Talking and hearing is essential in communication with patients, physicians, nursing staff and ancillary support staff and in receiving doctor's orders and doctor's notes. Near visual acuity required to work with charts and records.

Environmental / Working Conditions

Works in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated building. Hours may vary to accommodate needs in the department as prescribed by the philosophy of the hospital. Exposure to blood borne pathogens is high risk.
