The Office of Undergraduate Studies invites applications for the position of Impact Scholars Coordinator. From admission to graduation, the units of the Office of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Utah provide every student with an exceptional educational experience that empowers them to lead transformational lives wherever their educational and professional futures take them.

Impact Scholars is a grant funded program and one of two programs within Foster Youth Futures at the University of Utah. Impact Scholars provides academic, social, and transitional support to students who are alum of Utah’s foster care community. Specifically, Impact Scholars serves our First Star Academy of Utah alumni, any student with previous foster care experience who currently studies at the University of Utah or Salt Lake Community College, as well as any anyone in Utah with foster care experience who is older than 18 and wants to attend a university or college.

The Program Coordinator will conduct targeted outreach to foster youth alumni and provide timely student support services to former foster youth, Additionally, the Coordinator is responsible for tracking student progress through semester academic progress reports, proactive support strategies, individual and group student engagement and meetings, and referrals to external and campus support services as needed. The position will assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of programming to support former foster youth students in their transition from high school and community college to the University of Utah and focus on student retention and persistence to graduation. This position reports to the Associate Director for Foster Youth Futures.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the development and maintenance a cohort-based program; provide guidance, services, access to resources, program activities, development opportunities, and a system of support to promote student academic success and overall achievement of their personal and professional career goals.
• Manage a cohort of former foster youth participating in the Impact Scholars program, providing whole-person and comprehensive case management services including monitoring program participation/requirements and academic progress; maintain detailed notes on all student interactions.
• Program and manage monthly social activities with workshops, speakers, trainings, and/or other programming related to student success and engagement.
• Provide direct intervention and support when needed, including assessing and supporting students’ immediate needs, providing referrals to campus or community partners, ensuring basic needs are met, and maintaining regular contact with program participants.
• Participate in relevant trainings or certification programs.
• Engage in data compilation and analysis, records management, and reporting of program outcomes.
• Consult on matters concerning admissions, financial aid, registration, program eligibility, program benefits, development opportunities, career pathways, academic majors, transfer requirements, and related educational pathways issues.
• Oversee day-to-day program operations, administrative functions, program activities, and student services offered through Impact Scholars; Impact student check requests, database maintenance, and program event planning.
• Interprets, applies, and explains rules, regulations, requirements, and restrictions which may be sensitive, confidential, or complex in nature; advocate and empower Impact students in the process
• Complete and submit required administrative paperwork in a timely manner.
• Prepare and/or update program website, list serve, bulletins, newsletters, handbooks, policy guides, fact sheets, brochures, and related program material.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalency) in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency. Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience. (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience.)

Preferences

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Education, or a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency required. Familiarity with supporting minoritized (first-generation, low-income, students of color) success and a commitment to helping all students achieve their dreams. Working knowledge of laws and policies affecting related student populations.
• Evidence of successful work with a range of students, including populations typically underrepresented in higher education.
• Experience building effective working relationships and open communication with students, staff, faculty and University leadership.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally to diverse audiences including administrators, faculty, students, and staff.
• Skills in decision making that allow for quick, informed, and appropriate decisions essential to understanding students’ needs and identifying where those needs can best be met.
• Ability to thrive in a rapidly evolving environment with a positive attitude, embracing change and adapting to student needs.
