Job DescriptionThe Access and Resources Sharing Department at the Syracuse University Libraries is searching for an Access Services Supervisor to oversee circulation services and desk operations during assigned hours. Coordinate shelving and stacks management. Work closely with the other supervisors to plan stacks maintenance, circulation, and reserves. Directly supervise up to two Access and Resource Sharing Library Technicians and direct the work of multiple staff and student employees during assigned shifts or while working on projects. Assist with Access and Resource Sharing workflows as needed, including retrieval, shelving, and resolving service issues. Provide advanced-level assistance on patron account issues as needed. Assist with quality control of services, workflows, and efficiency in Access and Resource Sharing.

Education and ExperienceRequired qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five (5) plus years of experience in Access Services, or public service areas of a library, or other customer service setting.

Desired qualifications:

  • Three (3) plus years supervisory experience in a public services or customer service environment preferred.

Skills and Knowledge 

Best combination of:

  • Strong supervisory and management skills.
  • Experience with complex software applications, as well as office software and tools. Ability to learn new software including library systems and applications.
  • Strong skills in public or customer service and providing efficient service.
  • Strong critical thinking skills in understanding, analyzing, and solving problems related to library service and operations.
  • Strong discernment and judgement in supervising staff and services.
  • Ability to be a proactive, engaged, and responsive member of a team.
  • Creativity, flexibility, and ability to adapt to change.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities including verbal, written, and persuasion communication skills.
  • Experience with team building and motivating staff to increase engagement.
  • Strong time and priority management skills.

Responsibilities 

  • Oversee Circulation services and desk operations during assigned hours.
  • Coordinate shelving and stacks. Work closely with the other Access Services supervisors to plan stacks maintenance, circulation, and reserves.
  • Directly supervise up to two Access and Resource Sharing Library Technicians and direct the work of multiple staff and student employees during assigned shifts or while working on projects.
  • Help coordinate service schedules to maximize use of student employees and staff.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of ongoing training of student employees and ongoing training and professional development of Library Technicians.
  • Assist with Access and Resource Sharing workflows as needed, retrieval, shelving, and resolving service issues.
  • Assist with quality control of services, workflows, and efficiency in Access and Resource Sharing.
  • Provide advanced-level assistance on patron account issues as needed.
  • Provide supervisory support in Access Services across multiple locations.
  • Provide supervisory support to student employees in Maps and Government Information service area.
  • Collaborate with other Office Supervisors in Access and Resource Sharing on service coverage, process improvements, workflow analysis, and service improvements.
  • Assist with data collection and assessment.
  • Other duties as assigned. This includes lead, coordinate, and assess complex projects as assigned.
