Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for assisting in filling prescriptions and dispensing drugs in a state institution or hospital, may compound drugs under close supervision, or may serve as the operations manager for the pharmacy. 

Typical Functions

The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following:

  • Assists pharmacist in filling prescriptions and counting pills; uses electronic pill counter; including typing or printing labels and posting all information on appropriate records
  • Distributes filled and labeled prescriptions
  • Cleans and maintains pharmaceutical equipment; prepares standard solutions
  • Ensures inventory control standards are maintained according to the State Board of Pharmacy regulations. This includes ensuring drug supplies are used according to dates; removal of outdated supplies from stock; requisitioning supplies; receiving and completing inventory reports for requisitioned medical and surgical supplies; reconciliation of medications; and checking incoming supplies for dates, dosage and conformance with requisition
  • Coordinates and schedules staff according to workload
  • Maintains licensures, required pharmacy documentation, and filing systems as required according to agency policies, federal and state laws and regulations, and other governing entities
  • Ensures pharmacy is in compliance with the Joint Commission (JCAHO), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and other governing rules, laws, or policies
  • Serves as the pharmacy operations manager

Level Descriptor

Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others.

This is the specialist or team lead level where employees are assigned responsibilities for maintaining, auditing, and reporting on the inventory for drugs and medical equipment and paraphernalia; training, coaching, and mentoring lower-level staff, and other related complex and technical pharmacy services.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of team dynamics, rules, policies, and guidelines of dispensing drugs; and the various databases and used in the pharmacy

Ability is required to work in a team environment; provide quality customer service; and maintain electronic and paper documents. 

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of three years of experience as a pharmacy clerk and possession of a pharmacy technician permit issued by the Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy and/or other recognized pharmacy technician certification board as required by the hiring entity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the completion of thirty semester hours of college course work for each year of the required experience.
