The IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) is 1 of only 57 National Cancer Institute (NCI), designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States. This prestigious designation recognizes centers around the country that meet rigorous criteria for world-class, state-of-the-art programs in multidisciplinary research. The IUSCCC puts significant resources into developing research programs, faculty, and facilities that will lead to better approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.

The IUSCCC Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (OCOE) is responsible for linking research in the IUSCCC to the needs of Indiana residents and disseminating that research in order to lower cancer mortality and morbidity and to reduce cancer disparities in Indiana. This effort requires coordination of activities throughout the state, including partnership with academic and community organizations, evaluation of outcomes, and continual environmental scans to assess the impact on cancer morbidity and mortality.

Job Summary

The Director of the Indiana Cancer Consortium (ICC) provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and stakeholder engagement to advance ICC's mission of reducing Indiana's cancer burden. To further its mission the ICC maintains a coalition of participants and partners throughout the state that assist in carrying out the Cancer Control Plan for Indiana. ICC works across the cancer care continuum, including primary prevention, early detection, treatment, and survivorship, to align efforts, maximize impact, and ensure equitable cancer control strategies. 

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Looks at things like governance management, committee oversight, membership growth, grant writing, strategic planning, training, communication, partnership development, program evaluation, and overall leadership of the organization.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors; ensures strong governance practices, strategic alignment, and accountability. 
  • Leads the development and implementation of ICC's strategic plan, aligning it with CDC's National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program and statewide health priorities. 
  • Ensures compliance with funding requirements (CDC and other grantors) and maintains strong fiscal oversight.
  • Provides leadership and support to ICC's committees and workgroups, ensuring they have clear objectives, adequate resources, and measurable outcomes. 
  • Recruits, engages, and retains ICC members of all backgrounds ensuring broad representation across sectors, disciplines, and communities. 
  • Develops and maintains relationships with current and potential funders.
  • Leads strategic communications efforts, including newsletters, website content, social media, and public relations to enhance ICC's visibility and impact.
  • Represents ICC in state and national coalitions, contributing Indiana's perspectives to broader cancer control efforts.
  • Develops and implements evaluation strategies to measure the impact of ICC's programs and initiatives.

General Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs and implements programs or events, including the creation of materials to support these events.
  • Provides staff communications and serves as liaison to program participants, collaborators in other units, community partners, vendors and the public; approves staff purchase requests; arranges staff travel, accommodations, and research activities.
  • Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on a variety of issues such as budget management software and advanced strategies for timely spending of grant funds. May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
  • Recruits, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates faculty and staff partners, students and volunteers. Mentors, serves as a resource and provides guidance to team staff members as needed.
  • Researches available grants and works closely with managers to identify funding needs and potential sources, creates grant proposals that further advance support of the program and program participants; May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
  • Constructs and administers program budgets and approves spending. Tracks progress on deliverables, analyzes data on projected spending and prepares reports for higher management and funding sources.
  • Keeps abreast of best practices to recommend policies and procedures that deliver a quality program experience.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, healthcare administration, nonprofit management, or a related field
  • Master's degree in relevant field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in related field

Preferred

  • 5 years of leadership experience in public health, cancer control, healthcare, nonprofit management, or coalition building
  • Experience in grant writing, financial management, and strategic planning

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position requires in-state travel.

Work Location

IU Indianapolis

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
