This position has an anticipated start date during the current school year. Applicants currently under contract with another Maryland school district are responsible for verifying whether they would be released without prejudice if selected for this position.

DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Coordinator of Elementary Language Arts, with support from the Facilitator for K-12 Reading Intervention, Access and Opportunity, the Reading K-12 Resource Teacher will assist with ongoing professional learning and provide instructional support to reading specialists and teachers of reading in grades K-12. In addition, the Reading K-12 Resource Teacher assists in the design, development, and evaluation of K-12 Reading Intervention programs and provides ongoing support to designated schools.

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the implementation of the K-12 Reading Intervention programs and initiatives aligned with The Strategic Call to Action.
  • Assist with the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of K-12 Reading Intervention curricula and instructional resources that are based on standards and best practices and aligned with meaningful assessments that provide actionable data for instructional planning.
  • Provide leadership in the planning, organization, and implementation of professional learning opportunities for instructional staff and administrators.
  • Provide professional learning that supports the principles and practices of cultural proficiency and culturally responsive teaching.
  • Assist teachers with analysis of student achievement data and help them make instructional decisions based on student performance and student needs.
  • Collaborate with school-based administrators to ensure exemplary implementation of the HCPSS curriculum and to provide support as requested.
  • Mentor new HCPSS staff using the Danielson Framework for Teaching and Learning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet all the following qualifications, listed below, to be considered for the vacancy.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, curriculum and/or instruction, or a closely related field.
  • Certification:Hold a current Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) professional educator certificate with a reading specialist endorsement.
  • Experience:Three (3) years of experience as a Reading Specialist.
  • One (1) year of recent leadership duties, responsibilities, experience, and/or roles.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSMaster’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, curriculum and instruction, administration and supervision, or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a Reading Specialist.
  • One (1) year of experience designing and delivering professional learning opportunities (e.g., school and district wide).
  • One (1) year of participation in state, regional, and/or national organizations which promote access, equity, and student empowerment in reading instruction.

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

This is an 11-month per year position in the Howard County Educators Association (HCEA) employee bargaining unit. The current salary range for this position is on the 11-Month Teacher Salary Scale. Actual placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Howard County Public School System and the HCEA Master Agreement which considers relevant prior experience. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is exempt from overtime.

This is a grant-funded position. Funding and employment beyond July 1, 2025, is contingent upon the appropriation of additional funds.
