Director, Advanced Instrumentation Development Ctr

Essential Duties

1. Plans, conceives, designs and implements highly specialized state of the art instrumentation equipment and apparatus for a multi-faceted research project. 2. Develops and implements research applications to fabricate electronic materials, devices and processing equipment. 3. Manages research groups for the efficient flow of research projects. 4. Defines the direction of research and equipment design. 5. Manages research, research support design and projects associated with the project. 6. Supervises contractors and technical staff. Assigns design projects to technical staff. 7. Negotiates project designs and cost with prospective contractors. Prepares project designs and determines cost estimates. Develops material specifications and purchases. 8. Consults and advises on research technical designs. 9. Interacts with internal contacts to discuss and consult on research projects. 10. Designs research processes, implements and projects cost estimates. 11. In close cooperation with engineering administration, develops sound business procedures for accurate billing. Maintains source documentation for cost accounting purposes. 12. Interacts with vendors, suppliers, manufacturing companies, and other research institutions to develop and design specialized equipment and instruments. 13. Exchanges technical information. Stays abreast of new research technologies and developments. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and a minimum of eight years of related work experience in a research development facility, supervising and overseeing facilities operations or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position Focus:

Leadership & Operations:

Provide overall strategic leadership for the AIDC, managing all aspects of its operations, resources, and services. Ensure that the center meets the needs of the research community while maintaining efficient and effective facility management.

User Engagement & Collaboration:

Build and nurture strong partnerships with faculty, researchers, and academic groups. Understand their research goals and provide customized solutions to support and advance their work.

Strategic Planning:

Develop and implement long-term strategies to expand and enhance the center’s capabilities, ensuring alignment with both current and emerging needs in instrumentation development.

Funding & Sustainability:

Identify and actively pursue external funding opportunities, grants, and collaborative partnerships to secure the financial sustainability of the center and support its growth and innovative initiatives.

Equipment Management:

Lead the selection, acquisition, and maintenance of technical equipment, ensuring the center is equipped with the latest tools and technologies to meet research demands.

Financial & Budget Management:

Collaborate with business office staff on financial planning, budget development, procurement processes, and reporting to maintain the operational integrity of the center.

Culture of Innovation:

Foster a collaborative, creative, and innovative culture within the AIDC that encourages experimentation and problem-solving in instrumentation development.

Representation & Outreach:

Represent the AIDC at key conferences, industry meetings, and networking events to elevate the center’s profile, attract external collaborations, and stay informed of industry trends. In addition, actively engage with both the broader instrumentation community and the local community to foster relationships, raise awareness of the AIDC’s capabilities, and explore opportunities for collaboration, outreach, and impact within the region.

Professional Development:

Stay updated with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in research core management. Engage in continuous professional development to enhance leadership, management, and technical expertise.

Technical Oversight:

Depending on the needs of the facility, the Director may serve in Staff Scientist role, directly contributing to complex projects and tasks.

Team Leadership:

Supervise core scientists, engineers, and technicians, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to staff members.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in a relevant field.

Experience in an industrial or academic fabrication environment, preferably with a focus on instrumentation development.

Familiarity with advanced manufacturing techniques and emerging technologies in instrumentation.

Leadership experience in managing large-scale research or development facilities.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of rapid prototyping, classical machining, and electronics instrumentation development. Proficiency in the operation of tools in at least one of these core areas is essential. Practical experience with hands-on tool operation in rapid prototyping, machining, or electronics fabrication.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Safety & Compliance: Strong understanding of safety and health regulations concerning equipment operation, hazardous materials, and disposal. Experience in training others in the safe use of chemicals and gases related to prototyping and machining.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Communication Skills:Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with users, faculty, administration, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Facilities Development:Knowledge of evolving technologies and the ability to define necessary tools and facility improvements to meet the dynamic needs of researchers.
