STARTING HOURLY RATE: $27.49+ hourly, depending upon education and experience, GJ

POSITION PURPOSE: South Dakota Mines is seeking applicants to serve as the Laboratory Coordinator for the Leslie A. Rose Department of Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate will coordinate, lead, and manage the laboratories, shops, and related staff and student employees, for the mechanical engineering department.

Duties include supervising the department’s Equipment Technician and workflow to run the department’s machine shop effectively and efficiently. Recruit, supervise, manage, and train student employees (“mentors”) that support the department’s shops and labs. Desired skills and experiences include: manual and power hand tools, metrology, wood shop tools and machinery, metal machining (including manual and CNC milling and turning), and welding (arc, MIG, and TIG-GTAW).

Setup, maintain, and operate department shop equipment. Maintenance and inventory of existing department equipment. Manage shop budgets for consumables, supplies, and maintenance. Assist faculty with procurement of new equipment and supplies as well as disposal of old equipment and supplies. Assist faculty and students with project manufacturer and assembly.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Machining
  • Welding
  • Project management, including budget management
  • Woodworking
  • Drafting and manufacturing drawings
  • Dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Computer hardware and software
  • occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanics’ trade
  • safe handling and disposal methods for hazardous materials
  • human relations sufficient to establish working relationships with coworkers and customers.

Ability to:

  • use manual and power tools
  • use metrology tools (micrometers and calipers)
  • use manual and power wood shop tools
  • use CNC waterjet and plasma cutters
  • welding (arc, MIG, and/or TIG-GTAW)
  • additive manufacturing (3D printing)
  • read production drawings
  • diagnose malfunctions and determine corrective actions;
  • operate computer software applications;
  • read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and manuals;
  • use a variety of machine shop tools and equipment;
  • establish working relationships with coworkers and customers

COMMENTS: Rarely, will need to work weekday evenings or Saturdays.
