The Office of Multilingual-Multicultural Education (OMME) exists to guide CPS in providing a high-quality education for all language learners that is attentive to a culturally and linguistically diverse community of students, families, and educators. OMME aims to achieve its mission through strategic planning, collaborative partnerships, professional development, and the production of tools and resources to improve instruction.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Office of Multilingual Multicultural Education (former OLCE) World Languages’ Education Director, the World Language Education Specialist will be responsible for providing guidance and support to CPS K-12 World Language Education Programs. This will include the implementation of instructional practices, program models, and curriculum planning. The World Language Education Specialist will ensure that all CPS World Language Education programs align with state and national standards. This is a full-time exempt position that pays for hours worked on a salary basis.

This Job Will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Develops and delivers professional development in a variety of venues and formats for different audiences
  • Supports the development of curriculum guides and rubrics that support the implementation of world language education programs for K-12 students
  • Supports the vetting of high quality instructional and intervention materials for students enrolled in world language education programs
  • Researches, evaluates, and prepares recommendations on curricula, instructional methods, assessments, technology, and materials for world language education programs
  • Supports the development of performance assessments designed to assess students enrolled in world language education programs
  • Supports the implementation of curriculum and instructional strategies that align to state and national standards for the teaching of world language
  • Collaborates across departments to ensure alignment and coherence
  • Other duties as assigned

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required
  • Master’s degree in Education preferred Valid Professional Educator’s License (PEL) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) with appropriate content and/or grade-level endorsement(s), required.

Experience Required:

  • Minimum of (5) five years experience as a Language Education Teacher Administrative and leadership experience preferred
  • Experience with coordinating and/or providing professional development required Bilingual, or multilingual

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in standards-based instructional planning process: backward mapping from standards to instruction
  • Expertise in designing quality World Language Education instructional programs
  • Solid understanding of language acquisition and literacy development
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders
  • Ability to establish efficient working relationships with colleagues, district and school staff, and community-based organizations
  • Ability to manage, problem-solve, and delegate as situations dictate
  • Able to improve conditions for working and learning as a teamAble to travel to schools and other locations throughout the district Demonstrate willingness and disposition to learn
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrate exceptional written, verbal, and oral skills
  • Demonstrate proficiency with technological tools and software, such as Google Docs, Microsoft Office, and Mac applications

Conditions of Employment:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
