TxDOT's Dallas District is looking for a Maintenance Contract Inspector (General Transportation Tech) I, II, or III based in Mesquite, TX. This position performs routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine & contract maintenance, bridge inspection, record keeping, roadway repair, light & heavy equipment operation, preventive & minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, & assisting the public during emergency situations. This position is for a Maintenance Contract Inspector I, II or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Maintenance Contract Inspector I: Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, maintenance, and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Maintenance Contract Inspector II: Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Maintenance Contract Inspector III: Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for the Maintenance Contract Inspector I include:

  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Maintaining a safe working relationship.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes.
  • Using of light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. 

Additional duties for Maintenance Contract Inspector III include:

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in inter-modal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes.
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No education required.

ExperienceMCI I = No experience required; MCI II = 1 year experience*; MCI III = 2 years experience*

  • Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Required to wear protective gear, including, respirator, hard hat, steal toed boots, and other equipment or devices
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
