Our US Corporate Tax practice assists organizations in deciding which US corporate structure will be the most effective from a tax perspective – subsidiary, branch, or joint-venture partnership; assists clients in choosing effective methods of capitalization and financing that are efficient; and assists clients with the US tax compliance requirements.

You will work with the largest group of U.S. Tax professionals outside of the United States, learning from and assisting Senior Accountants, Tax Specialists, Managers and Partners, in selecting the type of subsidiary capitalization that is most beneficial to our clients. You will be responsible for a variety of technical and support functions, including working with management and provide compliance related tax services to our diverse clients and assist in the preparation of corporate U.S. tax-return filings.

We are currently seeking a Staff Accountant to join our US State and Local Tax (SALT) practice.

What you will do

  • Provide compliance and advisory advice and solutions to Canadian based clients across multiple industries, covering a broad range of SALT topics including:
  • State tax reviews and nexus determinations
  • Sales taxability decision matrices.
  • Transactional analysis and post-transaction SALT planning.
  • Application of transaction taxes (e.g., sales and use, property transfer, etc.)
  • Tax effects of restructurings.
  • General ad hoc SALT consulting services.
  • Assist with vendor and buyer due diligence SALT procedures and provide general support to our M&A practice on SALT matters.
  • Provide support to US tax compliance team on state income and franchise tax technical issues, including assistance with determination of state income tax filing positions.
  • Assist in handling notices received from state tax authorities.
  • Research and draft technical memoranda on various state and local tax topics.

What you bring to the role

  • Is in process of obtaining, or plans to obtain, a US CPA designation, Enrolled Agent or US Masters of Tax or have already obtained a U.S. law license.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Enjoys researching and writing about technical topics and their application to real world situations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills.
  • Strong time-management abilities and self-motivation.
  • Demonstrates the ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Is keen to assist in the development and implementation of tax planning strategies for various clients.
  • Willingly takes on and learns new skills by researching a wide variety of tax issues and staying up-to-date on changing state and local tax laws and policies.
  • Excellent client service skills with an aptitude to understand the clients' business and maintain strong client relationships.

KPMG BC Region Pay Range Information 

The expected annual base salary for this position is $53,000 and may be eligible for bonus awards. In addition, KPMG offers a comprehensive and competitive Total Rewards program.
