If so, we are looking for Senior DevOps Engineers into the Core Delivery Service with the DWP Digital. Those roles are with our Payments, Identity and Trust and Integration teams.

You’ll be working on a tech stack of AWS, Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, Kong, Kafka, Gitlab CI/CD, and Python, plus many more exiting technologies.

We are looking for a driven and passionate Senior DevOps Engineer who would like to be part of a team delivering real value to people that need help during the difficult times of their lives.

You will act as DevOps leader, with line management responsibility of DevOps Engineers. This will consist of leading and supporting existing DevOps Engineers while increasing capability, standards, and practices across the organisation.

Job description

As a Senior DevOps Engineer you will be using modern tooling to develop CI/CD pipelines and DevOps toolchains where you will strive to put automation at the heart of everything you do.

You will craft and implement solutions that are highly available, resilient, scalable, extensible, and maintainable within multiple cloud environments.

Working across the organisation you will be pushing a mindset change to foster engineering ownership, and the importance of the integrity and maintenance of the services we deliver. 

Other responsibilities will include working across product-focussed teams to gather requirements, evaluate tools, implementing/updating solutions, provision environments, and assisting with operational issues.

Based out of Newcastle and Manchester, Payments are core to DWP. They are the biggest payer in the UK, serving 22m citizens which is 34% of the total UK population and make circa £230bn in payments annually generating 1/3 of the UK’s BACS traffic. 

We are delivering an ambitious transformation programme to reimagine and make best use of emerging future technologies in the banking industry to continue to ensure that people who get paid by DWP receive the right amount of money, at the right time into the right bank account. 

Based out of Sheffield, Manchester and Newcastle, Identity and Trust (ID&T) are building next generation Authentication, Authorisation, and Accounting (AAA) services built on common standards like OAuth2 and SAML. This enables the DWP to provide a common front door for citizens to access our services across diverse channels like web, telephony, and agent. When joining ID&T you’ll be working on a delivery squad of around 10 people building and maintaining services that fit this vision.

Based out of Newcastle and Manchester, Integration are looking for three DevOps engineers to help with the event and API platforms that are core to connecting DWP Digital services.

The successful candidate for the Event Platform will ideally have Kafka experience and will play a pivotal role taking our DWP event platform to the next level as we further scale up and evolve our event patterns to support event driven architecture across the organisation. A solid foundation of building event platforms and bringing others along on the journey will be key to success.

The successful candidates for the API Platform will ideally have experience of Kong and will play a significant role ensuring our DWP API platform is able to scale and meet future demand as we begin the next part of our journey. From API discoverability, gateways, and observability – there is a multitude of technology and business challenges to help solve.

Person specification

When giving details in your CV you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:

  • Lead criterion - Demonstrable knowledge of writing and maintaining Infrastructure, and Configuration as Code.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and supporting cloud-based applications (AWS and/or Azure).
  • Demonstrable knowledge of implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
  • Demonstrable experience of using Unix/Linux in a support and/or development environment including scripting languages.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a DevOps environment – Continuous Integration & Deployment, Delivery methods and techniques, including agile scrum experience.
  • Experience of supporting, guiding, and developing Engineers across multi-disciplinary teams in an agile environment.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information

Pay for this role is from £55,557 to £66,058. 

The maximum salary for the grade is £66,058, however a Digital Allowance of up to £12,459 per annum is available for exceptional candidates. Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed. 

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview. 

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary. 

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.
