Department Information

Public Art in the Department of University Collections (UC) stewards Indiana University's thousands of 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, decorative, and other miscellaneous art objects that are housed outside of Indiana University museums but are located on campus grounds across all IU campuses.

Job Summary

This position will be responsible for data collection of objects on campus and in storage.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists in processing incoming and outgoing artwork, as well as assist in the movement of the art within the IU Bloomington campus and IU regional campuses as needed.
  • Collaborates with IU staff, faculty and administrators at all levels. This collaboration will require a friendly and professional demeanor, and one that is able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form when working with colleagues and vendors.
  • Works closely with the rest of the Campus Art team and assist on an as needed basis throughout the IU system.
  • Creates and manages the database for collection records which includes processing, photographing, cataloging, and locating all incoming exhibits in the museum system.
  • Coordinates with IT to ensure collections database and multimedia servers are maintained and ensures staff technology requirements are satisfied.
  • Oversees collections storage security by monitoring humidity and temperature fluctuations and ensuring a secure environment for collections and staff, pest management, HVAC and cleaning personnel.
  • Inventories collections, manages student workers, maintains statistical data, updates conservation records with conservation treatment reports provided by independent conservators, attend training, and trains users. Coordinates with moving and setups and other collections handlers to ensure the safe transportation of artwork, artifacts, and collections.
  • Art handling, data collection, condition reporting, inventorying and storage.
  • Enters data into TMS, photo editing, assists with image copyrights and reproductions, assists with incoming and outgoing loans.
  • Prepares objects for storage or travel and assisting Campus Art staff with the installation of large projects and the moving of art.
  • Files, supervises cleaning crew, other duties as needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in art history, museum studies, or related field

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Museums Studies, Arts Administration, or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • Some related experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Possesses a valid driver¿s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
