POSITION DETAILS

Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategy, the Director of Institutional Research provides strategic, managerial, organizational, and operational leadership over the Office of Institutional Research. In this capacity, the Director will manage the institutional data request processes, participate as an active member of institutional bodies, and will provide technical and disciplinary expertise as needed to facilitate and support evidence-based and data-informed decision making as well as a culture of inquiry at the College. Additionally, this individual will work closely with other members of the Institutional Effectiveness and Strategy Division to support strategic and operational planning, annual assessment and periodic programmatic evaluation within academic programs and AES unit reviews, predictive analysis and strategic insights, and regional accreditation. The successful candidate will also be charged with leading an office responsible for supporting internal and external surveying; data collection, analysis, and dissemination; and the expansion of data visualization, the utilization of dashboards, and leveraging of the Power BI capabilities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees the strategic direction and operational management of the College's data management, governance, and analytics functions, ensuring effective leadership and alignment with the institution's goals and objectives.
  • Leads the collection, analysis, and dissemination of comprehensive institutional, divisional, departmental, and office-level information to the college community and external reporting agencies, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Provides strategic leadership and direction by collaborating with the Senior Leadership Team, the President’s Leadership Team, College Governance, the Institutional Effectiveness and Strategy team, and other institutional bodies. This includes providing substantive support and insights needed for institutional effectiveness, informed decision-making, strategic and operational planning, outcomes assessment, and accreditation processes.
  • In collaboration with other members of Institutional Effectiveness, ensures the leveraging and growth of innovative institutional analytics practices and engagement through the use of data visualization, dashboards, data mining, and visualization tools.
  • Maintains strategic leadership and ensures accountability for annual institutional and external surveys and compliance requirements.
  • Directs a variety of institutional data and analytics systems and other resources;
  • Provides training and support to faculty and staff as it relates to institutional research functions,data governance and infrastructure, CUNY and institutional data policies, privacy concerns, compliance mandates, and the use of interactive visualization tools.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred qualifications include:

  • A master’s, professional, or terminal degree in a relevant field (social science, data science, computer

science, etc.);

  • Three or more years of managing professional and/or support staff with a commitment to professional development;
  • Experience working within a higher education setting, preferably public institutions;
  • Expertise within the field of institutional analytics and data governance;
  • Documented experience and expertise within the field of institutional research;
  • Documented experience with either SPSS or SAS applications;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications as well as data visualization tools and dashboard development;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with R, SQL, or other programming languages;
  • Experience with database management;
  • A track record of developing, maintaining, and strengthening networks and working relationships with

students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external constituencies;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication abilities;
  • An appreciation of and commitment to diversity; and
  • Excellent planning, time management, and delegation skills.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Directs institutional research programs and contributes to academic program planning, evaluation, and other activities related to the College's mission.

  • Works collaboratively with senior management on issues of assessment, including general institutional effectiveness and measures of student success and learning
  • Designs and oversees research efforts with an institutional scope and assists departments and offices with focused research needs
  • Coordinates program reviews and accreditation reporting
  • Manages institutional research data systems and other resources
  • Maintains standard management information and official statistics for internal and external reporting
  • Develops procedures to support analytical, planning, and assessment functions in student and academic areas
