The Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) was established in May 2019 and evolved from the Institute for Molecular Engineering, which was founded in 2011. The PME integrates science and engineering to address global challenges from the molecular level up. The PME’s rigorous academic and research programs are made possible through the University of Chicago’s unique partnership with Argonne National Laboratory. The Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering is the first new school at the University of Chicago in three decades and the first school in the nation dedicated to molecular engineering. In the next phase of growth as a School, the PME will continue to expand its team of world-class faculty researchers and empower students from diverse backgrounds to collaborate with faculty in cutting-edge facilities. The PME aims to bring solutions for urgent societal problems to the forefront, while training the next generation of scientific leaders and entrepreneurs.

Job Information

Job Summary:

The Shipping and Receiving Clerk is responsible for interfacing heavily with the PME’s faculty, staff, researchers, and students to provide support and warehouse/shipping services as needed from the Dock/Shipping area as directed by the Dock Manager and/or Building Administrator.

Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the daily logging, scanning, distribution, and deliveries from UPS, DHL, Federal Express, Airborne, etc., inside the ERC, ACC, and TAAC, in addition to other buildings on campus as needed. Including the creation and maintenance of an accurate tracking system in the receiving area including sorting parcels/packages, retrieving, files, and matching packing slips (invoices) related to purchasing orders, including the handling of returns of erroneous deliveries.
• Responsible for keys to highly sensitive and secure units, such as labs, equipment, cylinders, gases, and other research materials. Scans, tags cylinders, and enters results into the database. Unloads and transports helium Dewar’s, transports empty Dewar’s back to the loading dock for pick-up, maintains inventory of liquid nitrogen Dewar’s, and refills Dewar’s as needed for lab personnel.
• Provides facilities services support for day-to-day operations, including assembling, disassembling, and moving of furniture and equipment as needed. Assists with, but not limited to, office relocations, furniture moving, shelving, and removal of other equipment as necessary; prepares conference room setups; and any/all other daily facilities requests as needed.
• Assists Dock Manager with all activities related to the receipt, storage, and distribution of lab animal care supplies and equipment so that inventories are maintained, and all supplies are distributed to the proper facilities in an effective and efficient manner as needed to satisfy the requirements of customers during the refurbishment of the main ARC freight elevator.
• Assists with tracking supply stocks in facilities, distributing stocks throughout facilities, removing waste containers from facilities, and cleaning of communal hallways and rooms as needed.
• Assists with uncrating and transporting equipment as needed as well as breaking down and removing crate material.
• Serves as facility point of contact for evening and weekend events. Back-up for co-workers on occasion Fill-in for co-workers on vacation or when this department is short handed in other areas.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:

• High school diploma or GED required.

Experience:

• Minimum six months of relevant experience required.
• Background with dock/warehouse environments required.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

• Knowledge of shipping and receiving is a plus.
• Proficiency with standard computer programs such as Microsoft Office suite, and others.
• Skilled in the use of a personal computer and standard software.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

• Possible outside weather conditions (spring, summer, fall, and winter).
• Irregular work schedule.
• Perform large amounts of walking daily.
• Lifts and moves items (boxes, cylinders, tables, etc.) that may weigh more than 50 pounds.
• Uses a variety of tools and equipment for moving materials and equipment.
• Requires use of personal protective equipment.
• Works with low voltage (less than 600 volts), ladders/scaffolds, power/hand tools, and pressurized vessels.
• Bends, crouches, or stoops and stand for 4 hours or more.

Pay Range:

• $20.00 - $25.00 per hour.
