Journalist - PT

Lee Enterprises is seeking a part-time journalist to write, edit and curate news stories for its weekly Central Virginia publications: the Greene County Record, Orange County Review and Rural Virginian, covering Louisa, Fluvanna and Buckingham counties. 

This staff member will be expected to cooperate with regular contributors and freelancers as well as reporters and editors at Lee’s other publications in Virginia, specifically The Daily Progress, which serves as a hub for weeklies in Charlottesville’s outer counties.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of Central Virginia in order to write, edit and curate stories covering a range of topics, including local government, schools, sports and business. The candidate will also have strong time management skills and sound news judgment, able to think critically and plan ahead for a print product that goes to press once a week and a digital product that should provide real-time updates to readers. 

Responsibilities 

  • Write and edit general news stories for weekly print and daily digital publication.
  • Maintain story budgets and ensure stories are ready for immediate digital publication and print publication by weekly deadlines. 
  • Monitor workflow from pitch to publication, keeping the newsrooms’ budget up to date and keeping freelance staff on deadline. 
  • Line edit and copy edit stories to keep content tight in language and focused in narrative.
  • Finesse headlines for print and digital content to suit the medium and audience.
  • Analyze audience data on a regular basis to help better understand what is working and media and SEO. 
  • Work regularly with senior editors at The Daily Progress to coordinate and share content.
