Organize and manage field and greenhouse research activities. Coordinate routine activities associated with plant and soil sampling, processing, and analysis. Manage seed inventory. Train and oversee temporary field labor as needed. Other duties as assigned.
40% - Essential - Data collection and entry: The research technician is responsible for coordinating the collection of data for each research experiment. Essential tasks include small plot-level trait observations, plot measurements, field data entry, computational data processing, and data dissemination to project personnel. Primary field activities will be working hands-on, directly with plant and soil tissue samples; these tasks include collecting, processing, and analyzing high numbers of different tissue samples. It will be a role of the research technician to prioritize individual tasks under the overall direction of the supervisor.
30% - Essential - Seed Inventory Management: The research technician will be responsible for overseeing seed collection, processing, inventory, and storage for the Cereal Grains Breeding & Genetics Program, including using supporting software such as BarTender and inventory database systems.
10% - Essential - Field Maintenance: The research technician will be responsible for identifying problems in the field (pest, disease, mechanical, etc.) and resolving them. Essential tasks include cultivating and planting of research trials, administering fertilizers and chemicals to fields, harvesting research trials, and post-harvest processing and analysis of plant tissues.
10% - Essential - Field labor supervision: The research technician will be expected to train and oversee temporary labor workers performing fieldwork or related tasks including but not limited to planting, field cultivation, harvest, seed processing, seed inventory, and data analysis. Cooperate with graduate students and visiting scientists to conduct field research trials, post-harvest handling, and compositional analysis.
10% - Essential - Field equipment, laboratory and greenhouse maintenance: The research technician is responsible for organization, maintenance, and cleaning of field research facilities, including the field lab, greenhouse, and any equipment within these areas.
Education - 1st Bachelor's Degree - Animal husbandry, agriculture or a related field and work experience that is directly related to the area of employment. Work experience that is directly related to the area of employment may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Expected Salary Range ($37,900.00 - $55,000)
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
Normal Operations
Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
