Job Description: 

  • Advise the Chairman and Vice Chairman in key policy decisions and implementation of procedures to follow policies.
  • Develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with internal and external individuals and organizations.
  • Assure regular review and evaluation of all quality and appropriateness of patient diagnostic care.
  • Lead performance, quality monitoring, and improvement efforts.
  • Participate in Department budgetary planning and assists in the preparation of all required reports.
  • Serve on Department and/or hospital committees as requested by the Chairman or Vice Chairman.
  • Develop and maintain, in conjunction with physician and nursing leadership, ED policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Investigate and follow up regarding patient and staff generated complaints and issues.
  • Collaborate with UPMC ED and hospital nursing and ancillary staff leadership to meet care and oversight goals.
  • Provide leadership in defining the scope of diagnostic services for the hospital in a manner consistent with and supportive of excellence in patient care, hospital mission, and hospital strategic goals.
  • Ensure ongoing high-quality and timely consultative service availability in UPMC ED (together with UPP President and aforementioned EM leaders).
  • Assume responsibility for direct patient care.
  • Ensure maintenance of an environment conducive to teaching medical students, resident physicians, and allied health students.
  • Assist in the development of a continuing education program for the medical staff.
  • Assess the cost effectiveness of clinical practice at the Hospital and recommend methods by which the most economical use of equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals can be assured without compromising the medical necessities of treatment.
  • Participate and provide leadership in the peer review, corrective action and other matters involving compliance by Department members with Medical Staff and Hospital Bylaws, Rules, Regulations, Policies and Procedures.
  • Work with Hospital and Department Administration to promote and obtain adequate reimbursement for Hospital and Physician services from third party payers as needed.

Job Qualifications: 

  • Emergency Medicine Board Eligible/Board Certified
  • Must be qualified for a medical license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • Demonstrated leadership and communication skills
  • 3 years emergency department experience as a faculty member/attending physician
