Head Women's Volleyball Coach


The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Athletics invites applications in a national search for the position of Head Women’s Volleyball Coach. This full-time position is responsible for leading, managing and administering all aspects of the Division I women’s volleyball program in accordance with NCAA, conference and University rules and regulations while: 1) creating an atmosphere where graduation is facilitated through participation in intercollegiate athletics, 2) teaching student-athletes to be productive citizens who contribute to society for life, and 3) winning championships. The new head coach’s ability to achieve those three goals is facilitated by: 1) a fully funded scholarship budget, 2) the assistance of two full-time women’s volleyball coaches, and 3) competitive operating and recruiting budgets.

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum required experience: four years of related experience
  • Preferred experience: four years of successful collegiate women’s volleyball coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level; Division I women’s volleyball playing experience
  • An understanding of and commitment to the fundamental role that intercollegiate athletics, when properly implemented, can play in the educational development of UAB student-athletes
  • Possession of a thorough knowledge of the game, a sophisticated understanding of coaching strategies, and an ability to enhance player development
  • Leadership skills and the ability to manage team dynamics
  • Budget management experience
  • Ability to recruit qualified student-athletes to an academically competitive institution
  • Knowledge of and commitment to NCAA Division I rules
  • Ability to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program and monitor the activities of all assistant coaches and other individuals directly and indirectly involved with the program
  • Ability to work successfully with other departments and constituency groups on campus and in the community
  • Ability to motivate and develop student-athletes academically and athletically
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Commitment to working with multicultural populations and an awareness of issues affecting women, minorities and international student-athletes
  • Proficiency with computer applications and general office software
