Position Summary

The Duke Family Processing and Digitization intern will process and describe archival collections related to Duke Family history, as well as related collections documenting the history of the Carolinas region. Some of these collections will require remediating or enhancing existing library description. The intern will also digitize, perform quality control of digital files, and participate in the process of creating and sustaining digital collections at Duke University Libraries. This internship provides a unique opportunity to engage with collections as they move through their analog to digital lifecycle. The job will provide excellent hands-on experience for candidates seeking a career in archival process and /or cultural heritage digitization or digital collections in libraries and/or archives.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with establishing physical and intellectual control of manuscript materials through arranging and rehousing papers, media, and volumes.
  • Under guidance, performs processing of archival and manuscript collections and analyzes their organization, arrangement, and preservation needs. Creates and updates description according to Rubenstein Library’s inclusive description guidelines.
  • Prepares materials for digitization
  • Creates digital captures using scanning equipment in the Digital Production Center
  • Evaluates digital captures for quality control
  • Finalizes files for ingest into the Duke Digital Repository
  • Assists the Digital Collections Implementation Team in digital collections related work as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Learn to operate a variety of professional digitization equipment

Qualifications

Education:

Required: Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree and must be currently enrolled in or a graduate from an accredited advanced degree program.

Experience: 

Required: Excellent communication skills; ability to work independently (after training) and as a member of a team; accurate and detail-oriented; comfort and familiarity with Microsoft software like Excel, Box, and Teams; and respect for privacy and confidentiality.

Preferred: Demonstrated interest in archival work in general; experience or coursework with archival processing and/or digitization; strong analytical, organizational, and writing skills;

Working Conditions

  • Occasionally moves library materials weighing up to 25 pounds

Hiring Rate

$18.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 19 hours per week. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 9:00-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule. The Duke Family Processing and Digitization Intern will be working onsite at Duke University Libraries. Moving between Duke’s West and Smith Warehouse campuses will be required in this position.
