Job Description

The Assistant Director, MBA Career Coach provides career development services to BU Questrom School of Business full-time MBA students (and occasionally part-time students and alumni) through individual career coaching sessions, workshops, website and social media content and other innovative programming, both on campus and virtually. The Assistant Director collaborates in the planning, development, and implementation of strategies to promote career development services and activities, coordinating with the school’s other career-related programming and initiatives (i.e. Feld Center for Industry Alliances, Department of Alumni Relations, Learning Communities, Centers of Excellence like Health Sector Management, Social Impact and Masters of Science in Digital Technology, etc). The MBA Career Coach will optimize seamless student support by tracking and communicating information through written notes and verbal conversations, documenting the details of student interactions/appointments as well as full-time MBA employment and internship outcomes. This individual will engage in professional development to stay abreast of best practices and developments in career education and share relevant information with colleagues and students. This position must be available for occasional flexible hours: early mornings, late afternoons, evenings, and weekends. 

Job Function 1 (45%) 

Individual Career Coaching: 

  • Maintain a client career-coaching roster of approximately 130 full-time MBA graduate students, concentrating on not just general MBAs, but those participating in a Questrom “center of excellence” such as Health Sector Management MBA, Social Impact MBA or MS Digital Technology dual degree students. 
  • As the Primary Career Coach to ~130 FT MBA students, hold coaching meetings, proactively follow up with students to provide career support and manage employment tracking and reporting. 
  • Provide coaching and guidance to students on career assessment interpretation, short and long-term career strategy, internship and job search strategy, resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter review, networking, relationship building and social media advice, interview preparation, negotiation and decision-making process support, onboarding coaching and internal (corporate) career development. 
  • Manage communications to students regarding career requirements and upcoming programming; ensure career development deliverables (Targeted Search Plan, resume, LinkedIn profiles, career pitch, etc.) are met by deadlines. 
  • Based on international students’ job destinations, advise them on culturally-appropriate ways to network and story tell. 

Job Function 2 (40%) 

Create and Deliver Career Management Classes/Workshops 

  • Collaborate with MBA Career Coaching Team and sometimes IRMs and “Center of Excellence” faculty to create content and deliver career workshops and classes to MBAs, tracking and boosting attendance and ensuring deliverables are met by deadlines. 
  • Enhance curriculum each year to stay up to date with market trends, align with student needs and expectations, and offer new career development resources and approaches which improve effectiveness of career education. 
  • Improve the delivery process of career coaching content in an efficient and effective way by evaluating, developing and integrating in-person and virtual delivery methods and digital resources into current services to respond to growing number of students and their changing learning habits. 

Job Function 3 (10%) 

Liaise across Questrom and Boston University on career initiatives including: 

  • Partner actively with Industry Relations Managers in the Feld Center for Industry Alliances for assigned programs to provide relevant, seamless and comprehensive career development support for students. 
  • Meet with faculty and program directors to collaborate on career initiatives. 
  • Collaborate with academic advisors and the Feld Center to deliver Launch programming. 
  • Build relationships with the BU Center for Career Development and support university-wide initiatives and/or leverage career resources for the benefit of Questrom MBA students. 

Job Function 4 (5%) 

  • Participate in relevant professional organizations to stay abreast of best practices and industry benchmarks, as well as to reinforce the BU Questrom brand. 
  • Pursue professional development opportunities to improve capabilities and knowledge. 

Required Skills

A cover letter is required for consideration.

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
  • One to three years of working experience in a similar capacity
  • Experience providing career coaching or counseling to MBA students preferred
  • Experience in health sector industry preferred.
