UVA's Facilities Management (FM) department seeks candidates for a Fire Suppression Systems Technician. FM’s Fire and Life Safety Department is responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of UVA’s Fire Protection systems and equipment in Health System, Academic, Housing and Residence Life, and Athletics’ entities. The team carries out code required inspections, defined maintenance routines, and repair service for all University properties.

Fire (Water Based) Suppression Systems Technicians maintain, diagnose, and repair fire suppression systems, including but not limited to, fire pumps, backflow assemblies, and wet, dry, and pre-action systems. Technicians install, test, and maintain fire suppression related systems, equipment, and components to a constant state of readiness, maintaining code compliance per applicable building/state codes and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) related standards.

FM supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, FM is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

Duties Include:

  • Install and repair sprinkler system devices and components.
  • Measure, cut, and install materials while performing work in a safe manner.
  • Remove, install, and calibrate equipment according to specified standards.
  • Ensure availability, readiness, and proper use of required accident prevention procedures, safety and fire prevention equipment, protective clothing and devices, and first aid supplies.
  • Review plans and drawings for code compliance and inspects projects.
  • Have general knowledge and understanding of NFPA Codes and standards for inspection, testing, maintenance, and installation of fire suppression systems and/or familiarity with building codes.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with customers and team members.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: At least four years’ experience with fire suppression systems and pipe fitting.
  • Licensure: Valid Driver’s License with zero or positive points balance.
  • Vaccination: A pre-employment health screening is required. This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002.

Preferred Licensure: NICET Certification; Backflow License (must be obtained within 12 months.)

Physical Demands: This position requires bending, stooping, twisting, lifting more than 50 lbs, climbing ladders, utilizing aerial lifts, crawl spaces, attics, and stairs and using both hands to perform assigned duties. Must be able to read, speak, sit, stand, walk, use your hands, and reach.
