Responsibilities

About The Role:

The Global SQL Database Administrator III, under the general direction from the Lead and Manager, will assist in the planning, design, implementation, and support of SQL Servers and/or desktop platforms. This individual will be responsible for attending project meetings when necessary and assist in gathering and documenting infrastructure and security requirements. This individual will also become familiar with all compliance, regulatory and security requirements adhering to all corporate policies and standards. This person needs to be experienced in technology with good planning and coordination skills. An energetic, solution minded personality with drive, attention to details and excellent communication skills will be needed for success in this position.

  • Provide internal and external customers with excellent customer service while striving to provide world-class support
  • Collaborates with external and internal customers to analyze information needs and functional requirements and deliver the artifacts as needed
  • Must have high attention to detail, be well organized and be a self-starter and self-motivated
  • Effectively communicates current status of all projects, problems, and issues to the Global SQL Database Services Manager and Team Lead
  • Responsible for the setup and configuration of operating system level backups and restores
  • Responsible for the setup and configuration of SQL Server database level backups and restores
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for improvements to existing processes and for automation of time consuming tasks
  • Plan, prioritize, and provide direction for assigned software and / or hardware changes
  • Attend departmental, project and general meetings and effectively represent current status as appropriate
  • Execute operational support of corporate, branch and service center operations and all associated server hardware and software
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for improvements to existing processes and for automation of time consuming tasks
  • Effectively communicates current status of all projects, problems, and issues to the department management team
  • Ensure that all SQL Servers are running at optimal capacity
  • Study and analyze the performance and capacities of the systems and peripheral equipment/systems and prepare plans for future expansion and upgrades
  • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training as appropriate
  • Resolve incident management tickets as they arise and ensure timely resolution
  • Provide technical support for projects as directed
  • Manage SQL Server for the GMF Global Enterprise Lead the design, implementation and support of a highly available SQL Server infrastructure platforms
  • Define and evangelize enterprise policies, standards and position statements for new and existing SQL Server related technologies
  • Provide 3rd level support for Microsoft SQL Server for end users, application owners, and administration teams
  • Must be comfortable in addressing critical incidents and providing status updates in a timely manner
  • Build, configure, and support Windows Failover Clusters to support SQL Server instances and Always On Availability Groups
  • Provides systems metrics, root cause analysis and proactive monitoring and communicates any performance degradation to management
  • Perform critical system changes after business hours
  • Adhere to all company authored policies, procedures and standards documents
  • Author policies, procedures and standards documents based on industry best practices and personal research and experience
  • Collaborate with the Global SQL Database Services Manager and Team Lead to develop and maintain professional network and business relationships with vendors, peer organizations, and other business contacts
  • Provide technical and operational support in designated technology areas
  • Assist the Global SQL Database Services Manager and Team Lead with new technology research in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in ITS technology, trends, and knowledge, and legislation as it relates to SQL Server and data management
  • Assist the Global SQL Database Services Manager and Team Lead with making changes to server platform designs as needed
  • Assist the Global SQL Database Services Manager and Team Lead in determining the direction and enhancement of the SQL Servers to meet the needs of the organization
  • Identify and evaluate third party vendors, technology, or processes for integration with GM Financial's technology and equipment
  • Perform selected product research as directed
  • Participate in an on-call support rotation for providing after-hours support
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Conform with all company policies and procedures

  • Knowledgeable of best practices in information technology governance and regulatory landscape for financial institutions
  • Expert level knowledge of SQL migrations and SQL Server consolidation
  • Advanced knowledge of Windows Server and Encryption Technologies specifically SQL TDE
  • Design, Implement and troubleshoot complex Windows and SQL Server environments
  • Significant experience in a large and complex business environment
  • Advanced knowledge of Windows Server and Desktop operating systems
  • General knowledge of desktop and server virtualization technologies
  • Advanced knowledge of general troubleshooting and support of physical server hardware
  • Expert knowledge in the SQL Server Database Engine including Reporting Services, Integration Services, Analysis Services, and SQL Networking configuration
  • Advanced knowledge of writing SQL/T-SQL queries and stored procedures, using Dynamic Management Views for troubleshooting, and automating SQL management
  • Advanced knowledge of local and SAN Storage disk management on SQL Servers
  • Advanced knowledge of multi-server management features of SQL Server
  • Advanced knowledge of configuration and support of SQL Server Always On and Availability Groups

  • Strong in the use of Microsoft Office software including strong ability to analyze data using Excel for reporting and data mining purposes

  • Advanced experience with configuring and troubleshooting SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups, and associated Listeners
  • Ability to configure, troubleshoot, and support databases that utilize Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)
  • Advanced experience with applying SQL Server Service Packs and Cumulative Updates
  • Advanced experience with manually patching the operating system of multi-site Windows and SQL Clusters
  • Ability to meet expected delivery dates and the tasks necessary to achieve objectives
  • Ability to think strategically and perform risk analysis
  • Ability to balance priorities in order to meet multiple requirements and deadlines while ensuring priority objectives receive proper emphasis
  • Ability to accept change and adapt to organizational change and shifting priorities

Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent work or military experience preferred
  • 7-10 years experience in Information Technology required
  • 5-7 years SQL migration experience required
  • 5-7 years experience with SQL Server and supporting features required
  • 5-7 years experience with Windows clustering and experience with multi-site clustering desirable preferred
