CIB Markets Technology - Athena Core – Agility Lead

Job Description

Athena is a cross-asset trade and risk management platform transforming technology at JP Morgan. It is a foundation of JP Morgan’s Global Markets business. It delivers innovative and efficient applications to a wide range of the firm's business, including sales, trading, operations, risk and research. It combines the best of open-source technologies with innovative components developed internally. Athena Core platform is the internal platform within Athena, delivering services that enable all financial products and lines of business in Athena.

We are seeking a Senior Scrum Master to join the Athena Core platform team who is currently going through an exciting transformation program. This is a hands-on senior scrum master role able to lead about three scrum or kanban teams.

Senior Scrum Masters in Athena have the right hand of the leadership, partnering, creating, driving and executing our transformation strategy. They support and coach the leadership including engineering and product managers, reviewing opportunities such as organizational structure, team locations, process improvements, and organizational needs. They are accountable for driving the transformation strategy. Finally, they are accountable for team effectiveness and adoption of Scrum and Kanban practices across Athena Core. Our senior scrum masters have several years of software development, software team lead or testing experience, and several years of scrum master experience.

Key responsibilities:

  • Expert in Kanban and Scrum frameworks and application of it in product management and delivery
  • Mentors, coaches and supports an agile mindset, values and ways of working
  • Facilitates event e.g., daily-scrums, planning, retrospectives, backlog refinement, workshops, community of practice
  • Supports product managers in ensuring that product scope and goals are understood by everyone on the team
  • Supports product managers in techniques for effective backlog management to maximize delivery of value
  • Supports product managers in prioritization processes such as OKRs, WSJF, backlog grooming
  • Coaches and guides the team on measures for improvements e.g. OKRs, agility measures, flow metrics
  • Helps the teams identify and resolve impediments
  • Coaches the team to consider sustainability factors e.g. tech debt, pace, engagement
  • Helps product managers understand and practice agile by leveraging empirical data and iterative delivery
  • Maintains agile metrics and creates plans towards improvement of team effectiveness
  • Protects the team from outside interference and takes a leadership role in removing impediments 
  • Coaches, teaches and leads the teams on improving flow
  • Facilitates team learning and improvements
  • Facilitates team health checks/self-assessments 
  • Guides the team on slicing work into small pots of value
  • Communicates organizational impediments to leadership and clears impediments for team(s) as required
  • Coaches leadership on adoption of agile principles
  • Supports Agility initiatives at team, team of team and agile programs level
  • Works with other Agility leads to increase the effectiveness of Agility in the organization

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Engineering experience: software development, testing and/or release management 
  • Agile experience: leading and coaching Scrum and Kanban teams in a Scrum Master role
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in analyzing data to identify team effectiveness trends and areas of improvement
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience in conflict resolution
  • Proficient in using statistical and BI analysis software
  • Strong communication and presentation skills and ability to explain their findings and present recommendations at different seniority levels with ease
  • Experience resolving impediments strategically and tactically at scale
  • Proven track record in leading Scrum and Kanban teams towards effectiveness and their business/product goals
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science
  • Scrum master certifications
