Job Description:

Job Summary: The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – POCT performs chemical analyses of specimens to determine presence of normal and abnormal components. Compiles data from various routine to complex medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Performs assigned tasks for all patient populations and works within one or more designated departments including Chemistry; Hematology; Microbiology/Immunology/Serology; Stat Laboratory; and/or Point of Care Testing (POCT).

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities:

  1. Serves as the POCT technical expert and information resource for the John Peter Smith Health Network. Participates in selection of test methodology appropriate for the clinical use of the test results. Ensures all activities within the scope of service continuously meet or exceed established regulatory standards.
  2. Collaborate with district laboratory POC resources to establish best practices.
  3. Investigates and evaluates all instances of non-compliance.
  4. Conducts ongoing training sessions as needed for point-of-care testing personnel and testing site administrators if indicated.
  5. Performs moderate/high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory supervisor, manager or director and reviews testing performance as applicable.
  6. Participates and maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens; performance improvement activities and mandatory continuing education programs.
  7. Adheres to and understands the laboratory’s quality control policies documenting all quality control activities including those that deviate from established performance specifications, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  8. Follows set guidelines to troubleshoot/correct assay problems or instrument malfunctions. Performs maintenance and works with supervisor/manager in troubleshooting QC or instrument problems.
  9. Participates in training and orientation of new employees and students, including technical guidance.
  10. Attends continuing education programs sponsored by JPS, manufacturer in-services and/or professional society programs. Appropriately uses the computer systems in the department, including proper use of order/reports/charging, and maximizes personal proficiency. Responds appropriately to email and other forms of communication in a timely manner.
  11. Performs extra projects as requested and approved by supervisor.
  12. Complies with all federal, state and local regulatory requirements to health care delivery.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology from an accredited college or university.
  • Documented evidence that meets qualifications as established by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988 (CLIA ’88) are met.
  • Must have one of the following certifications through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT):
    • Medical Technologist (MT); OR
    • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS); OR
    • Certified Laboratory Scientist (CLS); OR
    • Specialty certification within a related discipline.
  • 2 plus years of experience working as an MLS.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training in advanced laboratory analyzer operation and maintenance and POCT.
