Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Children’s Education programs are world renowned for teaching hands-on gardening and plant science to children and teens. Children’s Garden seasonal instructors develop and teach age-appropriate gardening lessons to a group of up to 12 children with the assistance of two to three teen apprentices from our Garden Apprentice Program. Instructors must participate in a training session prior to teaching each season in the Children’s Garden program. Brooklyn Botanic Garden is looking to hire up to six instructors. Hiring is based on program enrollment.

Term: January–May 2018

Compensation: $15 per hour

Primary Responsibilities:

Seeds and City Farmers:

  • Lead an age-based group of 12 children in hands-on gardening instruction in a half-acre edible garden (ages 4–6; 7–9; or 10–13).
  • Mentor two to three teen apprentices, who assist instructors in facilitating their group.
  • Develop and lead supplementary enrichment activities such as seasonal cooking activities or nature crafts.
  • Ensure that each assigned garden plot is planted out and maintained according to weekly tasks.

Trees and Saplings:

  • Work in a team to design, prepare, and teach hands-on gardening lessons to a group of 10 young children and their adult partners.
  • Ensure that each assigned garden plot is planted out and maintained according to weekly tasks.
  • Develop and lead supplementary enrichment activities such as seasonal cooking activities or nature crafts.

Mandatory trainings

  • Winter: Friday, January 5 | 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
  • Spring: 3 Fridays, March 16, 23; April 6 | 2 p.m.–6 p.m.;
  • 3 Saturdays, March 17, 24; April 7 | 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Teaching activities (Seeds and City Farmers)

  • Winter: 4 Saturdays, January 6–February 3 | 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
  • Spring: 7 Fridays, April 13–June 1 | 2 p.m.–6 p.m.;
  • 6 Saturdays, April 14–June 2 | 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Teaching activities (Trees and Saplings)

  • Winter: 4 Wednesdays, January 10–31 | 9 a.m.–3 p.m.;
  • 4 Thursdays, January 11–February 1 | 9 a.m.–3 p.m.;
  • 4 Saturdays, January 6–February 3 | 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
  • Spring: 7 Wednesdays, April 11–May 23 | 8 a.m.–3 p.m.;
  • 7 Thursdays, April 12–May 24 | 8 a.m.–3 p.m.;
  • 7 Fridays, April 13–June 1 | 2–6 p.m.;
  • 6 Saturdays, April 14–June 2 | 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Qualifications:

  • College-level studies or career experience in education, urban agriculture, nutrition, botany, or environmental or biological sciences
  • Experience teaching children
  • Gardening experience preferred
  • Experience and comfort working with youth and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Clearance of fingerprinting and background check
