Domestic Violence Shelter Coordinator

WORI Uganda

Company Type

WORI Uganda is currently looking for an intern to help coordinate the finishing of their shelter project.

WORI is a women's prosperity charity that aims to improve the lives of women. We are based in beautiful Jinja, in Eastern Uganda, where we have constructed the first ever women's shelter with all of the necessary services to enable women to regain self-esteem, safety, dignity and, above all, have access to justice. We have many initiatives under way, from small- scale events to large funding applications. As WORI is a small, grass roots, Ugandan run charity our fundraising ethos is extremely important. We aim to avoid creation of a narrative of victims that the western world is saving, whilst trying to engage with ideas of sharing skills and time as well as telling the story of survivors in Uganda which, like every country, has good and bad aspects.

We are looking for an intern to join our team: volunteering for 1 - 3 months in Uganda, as soon as possible. The ideal candidate must: have experience within fundraising and/or advocacy; be enthusiastic about development and women's rights; be willing to work independently and contribute great ideas.

Working in Uganda will provide the intern with an excellent opportunity to learn about women’s rights, development, Uganda and fundraising in greater detail. In Uganda, the job role will be varied and will allow an understanding of the organisation to be obtained by working in the field and working in the office on funding applications. The main tasks will involve

  • Grant research and writing
  • Creating advocacy campaigns
  • Developing donor relations
  • Updating social media

Jinja is an excellent place to live, and a great base to travel to other regions of Uganda and East Africa.

Unfortunately, WORI is not able to provide financial support for the internship, we also ask for a small fee to cover all of your costs in Uganda, mainly for local transport, a translator to work with you in the field and programme materials. For a 3 month internship this would be $200 (US). We would also ask that you cover your own costs of flights, visa and accommodation. Living costs vary depending on your lifestyle, but we are in cooperation with a cheap and friendly home stay where are volunteers normally stay, for $60 (US) a week including 2 meals per day and washing.

Amazing opportunity to help finish this life changing project and be part of a fantastic team
