ASSISTANT TEACHING PROFESSOR (LPSOE) OPENING

IN THE DEPARTMENT OF COGNITIVE SCIENCE AT UC SAN DIEGO

The Department of Cognitive Science http://cogsci.ucsd.edu within the School of Social Sciences, at the University of California, San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. We invite applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position in Human-Computer Interaction, Design. We interpret these areas broadly and invite strong candidates in related specializations. Potential fields include human-centered AI, interactive systems, information visualization, social computing, accessibility, educational technology, virtual/augmented/mixed reality, and more. We are especially interested in candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity within an academic setting.

The Assistant Teaching Professor is also known within the UC as an LPSOE (Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment). The LPSOE series parallels that of the research-focused series but with an emphasis on excellence in teaching and other instruction-related activities. Individuals in the position are expected to provide outstanding teaching (for ~2 courses/quarter for 3 quarters/year), as well as to engage in professional activity (which could include research on pedagogy) and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university. This appointment confers membership in the Academic Senate, and, contingent upon promotion, tenure-paralleling security of employment.

The UCSD Department of Cognitive Science was the first of its kind in the world, and, as part of an exceptional scientific community, continues to influence the field it helped to create. The department is truly interdisciplinary, with a faculty whose interests span anthropology, computer science, design, human development, human-computer interaction, information science, linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and vision. We welcome candidates whose Ph.D. or equivalent degrees are in these disciplines to apply. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in their area of expertise or completion of degree by the start date of the position. An interdisciplinary perspective and experience with multiple methodologies are highly valued.

The preferred candidate will have strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity. Candidates will be favored who will contribute to instruction-related activities (e.g., conducting TA training, developing new curriculum, creating instructional materials including online instruction, and employing new technologies) at the campus, statewide, and national levels.

At the time of application, candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or be ABD (all but dissertation) in Human-Computer Interaction, Design (HCI) or a closely related field. Contributions to diversity, inclusion and equity.
