Job Summary: The Histology Supervisor is primarily responsible for the histology laboratory or discipline that he or she is assigned. Their technical expertise will serve as a resource to the histotechnologists/histotechnicians and assistants within the department as well as the pathologists, physicians, nurses and patients who are our customers. The Histology Supervisor is responsible for supervision of staff within the section, equipment functionality and assay performance. They are also responsible for maintaining accreditation readiness and section compliance with all regulatory requirements. The individual will also be responsible for the teaching and training of histotechnologists and lab assistants in the execution of these procedures. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions: TECHNICAL OVERSIGHT/SUPERVISION Demonstrates current theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills to be applied to area of expertise.Works directly with the Pathologists as principle investigator for area(s) of expertise researching assays, recalls, errors. Assures readiness for accreditation inspections. Maintains Histology equipment and staining platforms in peak condition. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions.May stop production until remedial action is successful in restoring quality results.May initiate equipment repair, and validate functionality. May provide data for restoration of equipment and procedures to all accrediting agencies.Manages assays to provide optimal patient results.Performs or assigns for completion all correlations linearity, calibrations, and parallel studies in accordance with established written standards of accrediting agencies and legal institutions. Assists in procedural selections and new equipment selection processes.Implements new methods in accordance to established written standards. Troubleshoots procedural breakdowns. Manages recalls as needed. Demonstrates technical competence and can perform all analyses in area of expertise.Assists other technologists, technicians and assistants with the interpretation of test results and test run accuracy.Maintains all aspects of quality control and maintains required documentation.Attends specialty schools and training programs to learn all aspects of discipline related to Anatomic Pathology such as Immunohistochemistry platforms, Insitu Hybridization or other lab diagnostic specialty. Works the bench as needed. SUPERVISION Supervises Histologic Technologists and Histology Tech II assigned on their shift or department. Schedules personnel in a fair and equitable manner while minimizing the use of overtime. Responsible for employee training, coaching, and counseling as required. Performs annual performance evaluations and competency assessments. Maintains employee payroll in a timely manner. Drives employee engagement through effective action planning. Ensures training of employees/students and documents initial competency for each employee. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT AND QUALITY MANAGEMENT Incorporates the philosophy of quality and performance improvement into daily routines. Actively initiates improvements for key quality criteria such as turn-around time, accuracy, and sensitivity of test methods. Assists other employees in improving skills and knowledge. Educates peers and subordinates on customer service performance improvement initiatives. Encourages employee involvement and participation. Offers constructive feedback. Responsible for Error Management system responses and corrective action. CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TEAM PERFORMANCE Ensures team maintains established turn-around times. Maintains a positive impression. Greets everyone and treats customer as guests. Communicates effectively and proactively manages service recovery situations. Serves others from a team-centered approach. Leads current WellStar engagement program. Self manages time and resources effectively. Maintains confidentiality and follows all WellStar policies and procedures. GENERAL Maintains attendance and punctuality in accordance with system policy. May also serve as time keeper for assigned employees. Adheres to dress code and maintains a neat appearance. Wears and displays ID badge while on duty. Maintains an organized and clean work area. Willingly performs other duties as assigned. Follows employee conduct expectations as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Required Minimum Education: High school diploma Required and post-secondary education Preferred or commensurate experience to meet qualification for attaining professional credential. Preferred Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s): All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
