HCCS Special Education & Retention Specialist- (Acad Std Suppt Specl- HEa)

POSITION DETAILS

Reports directly to the Dir of HCCS, work includes completing New York City Committee of Special Education (NYC CSE) documents, maintaining appropriate files, creating reports to track student information and timelines. This position will assist in a cooperative effort with parents, guardians, family members, teaching staff, building principals, and coordinators. The Administrative Special Education & Retention Specialist will assist in developing opportunities for children with disabilities, support parent involvement, and collaborate with school staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership role in the facilitation of the special education accommodations or interventions (Individualized Education Services Program development [IESP])
  • Support team discussion in the initiation, review, re-evaluation and manifestation determination process for IESP
  • Initiate assistance from appropriate related services and /or team members and effectively complete the evaluation process and plan development.
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with federal laws and the resources of the Committee on Special Education
  • Plan, organize, and execute the responsibilities pertaining to special education family engagement; and promote parent, guardian and family participation in school activities
  • Communicate student and family needs to stakeholders including the principal, staff, and community
  • Establish long-range and immediate objectives and strategies for special education parent family engagement
  • Document all aspects of student information, consent, eligibility, plan development and progress monitoring within database ; and complete all required evaluation activities, data collection, and recording in a timely manner
  • Advise individual school volunteers to promote special education programming
  • Demonstrate ethical behaviors to foster a relationship with parents, guardians and families of students with disabilities, which encourages their participation in the learning experiences of the child
  • Conduct direct training of parents, guardians, families, professionals, organizations, and others connected to program
  • Interpret learning program to parents, guardians and families & clarify school policies to help parents, guardians and families understand the educational program
  • Select, use and adapt a variety of materials that will ensure all parents and teachers successful parent involvement
  • Use a variety of resources to support special educati on family engagement activities

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required. K-12 Special Education experience required (certification preferred). NYC DOE/CSE professional experiences strongly preferred.

  • Promotes program and advises students and College stakeholders on services, policies, and procedures

  • Provides student services such as workshops, seminars, and advising sessions
  • Coordinates efforts of faculty, staff, and other service providers to monitor and assess utilization, student progress, and program effectiveness

Salary commensurate with education and experience ($52,267 - $79,188).
