Division/Department Information

The Department of Art and Design at St. John’s University invites applications for an adjunct position in Graphic Design, to begin January 2025. The Department is located on the Queens campus in New York City, and offers BFA degrees in Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, and Fine Art, a BA in Art History and an MA in Museum Studies. The mission of the Department, since the first degree program was offered in 1963, is to provide a rich and challenging educational environment that emphasizes the creation of visually sophisticated works and concurrently develops the whole person: intellectually, ethically, and critically. Students in the 132-credit NASAD accredited Graphic Design program complete a rigorous program of coursework followed by a capstone course and internship or thesis.

Responsibilities

The Department of Art and Design at St. John’s University in Queens, NY is seeking adjunct faculty to teach two undergraduate Graphic Design classes for the Spring 2025 semester. ART 2115 Graphic Production is a project-based studio course that introduces issues around sustainability in design and is focuses on packaging and branding. It is taken by second semester sophomore Graphic Design students. ART 2130 Motion Graphics is introduces students to the dynamic world of motion graphics, blending principles of graphic design, animation, and visual storytelling. Students create graphics for various media, including film, television, and digital platforms using Adobe After Effects. Sophomores and Junior Graphic Design BFA students enroll in this course. Both classes meet in person for 2:50 twice a week at our Queens, New York campus.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Graphic Designer who is currently working in the field and has college level teaching experience. Successful candidates may teach one or both classes depending on scheduling. They should be able to teach packaging and After Effects – based animation. Ideally evidence of these competencies will be shown in the work featured in their own portfolio or in a portfolio of students’ work. Candidates should have a Masters degree or equivalent industry experience.

A list of three references will be required of finalists.

The 2024-2025 academic year hire-on credit hour rates for adjunct faculty are as follows:

Adjunct Professor - $1,900

Adjunct Associate Professor - $1,700

Adjunct Assistant Professor - $1,600

Adjunct Instructor - $1,500

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
