Job Description

Seeking full- or part-time graduate or highly qualified undergraduate intern to work with researchers in NREL’s Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences on data processing, analysis, and model development for mobility behavior and advanced vehicle/transportation technologies, and to support related projects and programs. Specific tasks may include:

  • Develop and refine data processing workflows for transportation data such as travel surveys and model outputs for use in data dashboards, standalone visualizations, subsequent analyses, and for archiving.
  • Respond to requests for access to the Transportation Secure Data Center (TSDC) secure portal environment and ensure security protocols are maintained.
  • Assist NREL researchers on projects providing insights into transportation energy systems, with a focus on how emerging transportation systems impact travel behavior, quality of life, and energy use.
  • Work with and analyze large quantities of real-world travel activity and vehicle driving data, and potentially leverage high-performance computing resources for larger scale analyses.
  • Quantify and visualize Mobility Energy Productivity (MEP) and impacts on MEP from emerging transportation technologies and paradigms such as vehicle automation, electrification and sharing.
  • Deliver quality products that synthesize external literature, data analyses, and modeling results. 

Document methods and assumptions and assist with preparing peer-reviewed publications along with high-quality technical reports and presentations.

Basic Qualifications

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Candidates who have earned a degree may work for a period not to exceed 12 months. Must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Highest priority preferred qualifications:

  • Python and/or R experience.
  • Strong collaboration skills—thrives working in a collaborative team environment but is comfortable working independently when necessary.
  • Ability to create compelling user-friendly visualizations.

Additional preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with Github.
  • Experience working with large datasets.
  • Knowledge of geospatial data analysis and/or scientific computing.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL and database administration.
  • Experience with Javascript, CSS, and/or html programming.
  • Experience in transportation or automotive fields.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Cumulative undergraduate/graduate GPA over 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Job Application Submission Window

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Graduate I / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 - $68,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Benefits Summary

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
