SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This position is responsible for providing high level legal support to Law Department attorneys, managers, and staff in cases and administrative projects. In particular, this position supports attorneys in Amtrak’s Litigation and Labor and Employment teams and assist with matters before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct extensive legal research, including gathering and analyzing research data, such as statutes, decisions, legal arguments, codes, and documents.
  • Draft complex legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, appeals, subpoena responses, contracts, discovery, preservation memoranda, and statements.
  • Prepare and manage cases for attorneys by organizing exhibits, finalizing affidavits and legal correspondences, and maintaining documents in paper and electronic filing systems.
  • Investigate facts and laws of cases, and search pertinent sources to determine causes of action and prepare cases.
  • Act as a point of contact for Amtrak’s outside counsel in collecting case materials.
  • Liaise with numerous employees across multiple departments within Amtrak.
  • Monitor and update cases through an internal case management system, noting deadlines and major case updates.
  • Interview witnesses and schedule depositions.
  • Partner with the Manager, Legal Support in identifying areas of improvement in case management processes, and act as a mentor to junior support staff.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Law and Information Technology departments in coordinating eDiscovery efforts in litigations.
  • Lead other special projects, legal support tasks, and administrative duties as needed..

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Paralegal Certificate
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience working in a law firm or corporate legal department environment
  • Excellent project management skills with a strong attention to details
  • Experience supervising junior paralegals and cases assistants
  • Experience coordinating or managing evidence collection efforts, with considerable experience and knowledge in strategizing eDiscovery collections
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with internal clients and outside counsel
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent research and analytical skills 
  • Excellent prior job performance

  • Ability to organize and analyze large volumes of information and documents

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7 years of relevant experience
  • Experience working with railroads or other industrial environments with extensive personnel policies, labor agreements, and discipline processes.

WORK ENVIORNMENT:

  • Frequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and case boxes weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • Ability to multi-task with minimal supervision.
  • Professional fast paced environment.
  • Communicates, comprehends, and responds to statements and instructions, both orally and in writing.
  • Frequently learns new knowledge, skills and tasks, both complex and simple, in order to maintain effectiveness in position.

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

The salary/hourly range is $78,600-$101,844. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation. In accordance with federal law governing security checks of covered individuals for providers of public transportation (Title 6 U.S.C. §1143), Amtrak is required to screen applicants for any permanent or interim disqualifying criminal offenses.
