Plumber/Maintenance Technician

The NHMLAC is seeking a Plumber/Maintenance Technician for our Operations department. The Plumber/Maintenance Technician works closely with the Manager, Crafts & Facility Services to perform a wide variety of building mechanical and repair work involving carpentry, electrical, masonry, painting, plumbing, or other mechanical and maintenance duties at the museums.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Plumbing: Installs piping for hot and cold water, waste sewage, vent and leader lines, gas, compressed air, etc. Installs and inspects piping of all types of materials subject to the plumbing code. Installs or assembles fixtures and appliances connected to plumbing and drainage systems. Inspects water mains, fire hydrants, service lines, fire hoses, and fire extinguishers when necessary. Locates and removes stoppage in waste lines. Determines reasons for operating malfunctions in piping systems and makes appropriate repairs. Performs welding and soldering work connected with plumbing.
  2. Knowledge/experience with the maintenance and repair of urinal cartridges, toilet flushometers, angle valves, p-traps, faucet O-rings, handles and cartridge valves, changing stations and stall hardware
  3. Use/experience with a wide variety of snakes & rooters to clean drain lines, rain gutters
  4. Building Inspection: Inspects buildings and facilities to ensure safety and to identify needs for repair and/or maintenance.
  5. Apprentice Guidance: Provides when needed support and guidance to apprentices and other helpers.

This position has the following requirements: 

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent required
  • Two years’ experience in general building maintenance and repair involving a variety of minor carpentry, electrical, masonry, painting and plumbing work
  • Licensed Journeyman in related field preferred.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Heavy Equipment: Must be able to operate heavy equipment including scissor lifts, aerial work platforms and forklifts.
  • Must have experience with shop tools, stationary shop equipment and hand tools.
  • A valid California Driver License and a Personal Automobile Liability Insurance or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation needed to carry out job related essential functions.
