Role Purpose:

The Senior Data Engineer & Systems specialist will be responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of Lonza’s R&D data & systems infrastructure which supports approx. 160 scientists in R&D. In this role they will work closely with R&D scientists to define their data requirements & manage multiple data engineering projects accordingly. They will actively engage & collaborate with IT to ensure R&D has access to the necessary systems & components for innovation whilst aligning with IT strategy.

Key Accountabilities and Duties:

  • Designs, implements and maintains Lonza R&D data & systems infrastructure & access management
  • Manages R&D Research Group data requirements, including prioritization and management of multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Leads the development & implementation of metadata standards in R&D, including the use controlled vocabularies and ontologies.
  • Designs, develops & implements scalable ETL pipelines & optimises data storage
  • Collaborates closely with Bioinformaticians and Modelers in R&D
  • Leads and mentors junior data engineers
  • Keeps abreast of current/emerging technology, tools & best practice that could be of benefit to R&D & implements as appropriate

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Strong programming skills in a common language (e.g. R, Python, Java, Go, Ruby, ...)
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies
  • Cloud computing experience, preferably Azure including IaaS and PaaS on a common platform
  • Experience setting up and maintaining data infrastructure, including database design (SQL)
  • Experience/knowledge of working within research & development (e.g. life sciences)

Education

  • Degree (required) *BSc Field of Study Data science, computer science, other quantitative subject
  • Degree (preferred) MSc Field of Study Data science, computer science, other quantitative subject
