We have an exciting opportunity for a mid-level Airworthiness Engineer in the Office of Airworthiness.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working with military and civil airworthiness authorities towards the certification of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). U.S. military certification work evolves supporting the U.S. Air Force’s airworthiness certification process to acquire Military Type Certificates and Military Flight Releases (MFR).
  • U.S. civil certification work involves engaging in the FAA’s airworthiness certification processes for Special (Experimental) Certifications, Type Certifications, Supplemental Type Certifications and Certificates of Authorization (COA).
  • Foreign Military Sales through the U.S. Air Force (USAF) will involve supporting processes unique to foreign military and/or civil certification authorities.
  • Will develop a strong working relationship with airworthiness certification authorities (U.S. civil, U.S. military and foreign), as required.
  • Collaborate with customers, certification authorities, and internal engineering organizations to establish and adjudicate airworthiness verification activities and documentation.
  • Comply with applicable customer airworthiness certification requirements, including design, development, safety, manufacturing and process standards.
  • Support the integration of airworthiness requirements into the overall engineering, manufacturing and maintenance activities.
  • Plan, oversee, assessing, document, and report compliance with airworthiness certification criteria.
  • Prepare or ensure preparation of required airworthiness certification documentation including certification plans, compliance documents, etc.
  • Support USAF’s Modification Airworthiness Certification Process as required for individual upgrade projects.
  • Facilitate changes to product designs, testing, analyses, maintenance, operations and documentation in order to satisfy certification requirements.
  • Track and report product improvements that provide airworthiness certification value, resolve airworthiness deficiencies or improve airworthiness standing of products.
  • Define, create, and manage tracking databases of requirements, standards, means of compliance, system artifacts, and other items related to airworthiness certification.
  • Coordinate technical interchange meetings for assigned system(s) or project(s)/program(s); interact with senior internal and external personnel (subcontractors, associate contractors and customers ) on technical matters requiring coordination among the organizations.
  • Provide guidance for engineers (internal, associate contractors, subcontractors) working on airworthiness related activities.


Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Expertise in the use of Microsoft Office tools required, and strong familiarity with Microsoft Access is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the airworthiness certification of foreign and domestic aircraft systems, and previous experience with foreign military sales preferred.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
