The Senior Molecular Scientist will support the client and DoD decision-makers by assessing molecular testing and sequencing needs and coordinating such activities with GEIS partners around the world. The Senior Molecular Scientist will maintain an understanding of current next generation sequencing and bioinformatics technologies and will have a strong background in infectious disease surveillance efforts within and outside of the DoD.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support the Next Generation Sequencing and Bioinformatics Consortium (NGSBC) through coordination of microbial sequencing initiatives across a network of laboratories.
  • Provide scientific and program management expertise to enhance next generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics (BI) coordination across the Services.
  • Communicate regularly with GEIS partner organizations in the U.S. and overseas to understand their molecular and sequencing, analysis, and reporting needs.
  • Assist in the development of guidelines and protocols for molecular sequence data generation, analysis, and sharing.
  • Work with wet lab technicians and scientists to understand workflows and help improve quality and performance in genomic data acquisition and analysis.
  • Provide guidance and expertise in the use of cloud resources to facilitate analysis and sharing of next generation sequencing data.
  • Coordinate with Service public health centers and other DoD stakeholders to improve and expand SARS-CoV2 sequencing and data coordination.
  • Support the review and prioritization of programmatic/Focus Area-specific strategies, programs, projects, and proposals to ensure alignment with overarching GEIS strategic direction, and provide recommendations on enhanced alignment and opportunities to address critical organizational gaps.
  • Assist in proposal review for meeting strategic priorities, scientific relevance, and ROI in coordination with the NGSBC Lead.
  • Assist in coordinating responses to requests for information (RFIs).
  • Support the development of publications, presentations, talking points, meeting EXSUMs, and timely information products based on GEIS-funded surveillance for DoD leaders and other stakeholders, in support of FHP.
  • Support GEIS partners during the development of manuscripts and reports for DoD stakeholders and peer-reviewed publications. 
  • Maintain awareness of NGS-BI policies and literature external to AFHSD, such as CDC and WHO; share relevant information with GEIS staff to ensure understanding of the broader picture of these relevant areas, reduce redundancy, and align GEIS initiatives with broader DoD and USG strategy.
  • Maintain awareness of advances in NGS-BI technology and DoD and non-DoD laboratory capabilities and provide recommendations for incorporating identified technology into the GEIS network.
  • Provide programmatic support as requested by GEIS Program Manager, to include reviewing and revising documents and other deliverables.

Supervisory/Management Authority:

  • This position will not have supervisory or management authority

Education and/or Experience:

  • Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DO, DVM, DrPH, or related degree) is required
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in laboratory, research, or public health setting required.
  • Experience with molecular epidemiology, microbial genetic sequencing and data analysis, particularly using NGS platforms.
  • Analytical and organizational skills to synthesize data into informational reports to support program evaluation.
  • Experience in manipulating and analyzing data to support medical or public health decision-making
  • Working experience with laboratory information management systems, MS Excel and statistical software such as SAS, R, SPSS, or STATA
  • Experience with bioinformatics, and/or variant analysis preferred
  • Experience in microbial genetic sequencing and bioinformatics and with advanced molecular techniques including isolation of pathogen RNA/DNA, RT-PCR, molecular microbiology and/or infectious disease testing
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Federal clients, particularly DoD, preferred
  • Experience with DoD CONUS and OCONUS laboratories preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Familiarity with whole genome sequencing platforms (i.e. MiSeq, NextSeq, MinION)
  • Background in infectious disease surveillance and public health preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead projects and initiatives to provide data-related solutions
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Ability to travel CONUS & OCONUS if needed
  • An Active US Passport
  • Excellent communication skills; both oral and written
  • The ability to successfully pass a drug screen and a federal background check is mandatory

Work Environment:

  • This position is performed primarily in a climate-controlled federal office environment with exposure to some laboratories.
