Communication Design Program

The BFA program in communication design at the College of Visual Arts and Design (CVAD) emphasizes conceptual thinking as a means to address design problems in a graphic design industry job position. Our student work is competitive on a national level, having garnered recognition from Communication Arts Magazine, Print Magazine, Creative Quarterly, Graphis New Talent, the Addys, the Society of Publication Designers, the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, and the Art Directors Club. The BFA program in communication design graduates up to 60 students per year. The undergraduate curriculum offers both a graphic and user-centered design concentration that helps students develop marketable skills and deep knowledge of diverse design settings.

College of Visual Arts and Design

Considered one of the leading visual arts and design schools in the nation, UNT’s College of Visual Arts and Design is home to more than 2,650 undergraduate and graduate students in NASAD and CIDA accredited programs including the BA, BFA, MA, and MFA in art education, art history, ceramics, communication design, drawing and painting, fashion design, interaction design, interdisciplinary art and design studies, interior design, metalsmithing and jewelry, new media art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and user-experience design, with certification offered in art museum education, and a PhD offered in art education. Position Summary 

The College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas (UNT) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Communication Design. 

The successful candidate will be research-active and teach undergraduate students in the graphic design concentration. They will develop a focused scholarly research agenda and make nationally recognized contributions to their field of expertise through professional practice.

The college’s standard teaching workload for assistant professors is four courses per academic year. Additional responsibilities include research, student mentorship, professional development, service to the program, college, university, and profession, and continued enhancement of the design department.

The University of North Texas (UNT)’s Department of Design is dedicated to fostering the success of its faculty and students. It offers a BFA and MFA in Design.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Completed relevant terminal degree by the time of appointment.
  • Active record of creative scholarship and research appropriate to the rank of Assistant Professor.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Evidence of university-level teaching experience.
  • Evidence of professional communication design experience, including publication design, digital/web/interactive design, branding, motion graphics, art direction, packaging, illustration.
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Cloud software: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects, etc.
  • Professional and/or teaching experience with interaction design, including prototyping methods and software such as Figma, Sketch, etc.
